Shelvey is going to be a very good footballer and Rodgers didn't get rid of him, like hendo he gave him option of going. Unlike hendo, Shelvey took it because he wanted first team football and wasn't prepared to take a chance and fight for a place.

In 21 league starts for Swansea this season he's got 5 goals (1 in 4) and 3 assists (1 in 7), which is really not bad at all for a 21 year old kid in his first season at a new club. 84% pass completion too which for someone who likes to spread the play and plays ambitious balls is also pretty good. It's his self-belief and swagger that sets him apart from most and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't carve out a very good Premier League career over the next decade.

I totally don't get the thing about him on here. I was talking to a couple of Swansea fans in a pub a month or so ago and they think he is a liability, no tactical accumen whatsoever. Looks good on motd because he always wants to get involved but half the stuff he does leads to the opposition getting the ball they said, and from what I've seen I completely agree.

I've never understood it either. He seems to be coming along ok at Swansea and might become a decent player one day. I just can't see why so many seem to think he'll be something special though. I've never seen him put in performance that would suggest he could have the top teams chasing him in the future.

He has his moments. He can certainly pick a pass and is capable of pinging it in to the top corner on occasion, but the same can be said of Charlie Adam.

If he hasn't got the tactical nous or mobility to have ever thrived in Rodger's team, then I doubt we'll ever regret selling him. I thought he could be frustratingly casual when he was with us and the swagger was just the misplaced confidence of someone who wasn't anywhere near as good as he thought he was.

Shelvey plays like a young Gerrard, the same rashness, the same Roy of the Rovers swashbuckling style, but without the same level of natural ability and athleticism that made Gerrard world class.

The lack of athleticism especially, in my opinion, holds him back from being a player that can be useful for us at the highest level; the lack of tactical intelligence holds him back further.

And Allen has none of those stats. Yet given the choice of who to trust to get my granny across the road I'd have to give the job to Allen.

Shelvey may carve out a decent premier league career much like Nolan has.
