With who though ? Is it really so easy ?Originally posted by Daniel 7 View PostI refuse to believe that Delph would be anything but a squaddie. Surely the owners realise that when you lose icons - like Suarez and now Gerrard, they have to be replaced, otherwise they might as well just ****ing not bother.
Nobody knows who our next club icon will be, but the thought that we could just buy a ready made replacement one for either Gerrard or Suarez is imo fanciful, we would need an inordiante amount of luck and spawn to be able to do that right off the bat in the first windows after they leave.
We'll either have to find and make our own home grown one, or one of our present players will need to step up, or else we'll have to get this club a whole lot more successful so that players at other clubs of the quality of Gerrard in his pomp, will want to sign for us over the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Madrid, Barca, Citeh, **** faces, Milans, PSG. etc.
Our options are a whole lot more limited than a lot of those clubs, simply based on the fact that a large majority of the best players all these clubs will be looking to buy, would choose many of them over us, so our targets are constantly being watered down, sometimes to the point of us having to sign players not even on our initial list of targets.
Now i'm not saying we can't do better with our signings, not at all, but replacing players like Suarez and Gerrard with ones of equal'ish quality by way of purchasing them, is bloody difficult.

Aye.
This has been our problem- we have become a second or third tier prospect & a club that has a habit of selling our best players.
3rd place. Worst champions ever.

I honestly think that Can, Henderson and Coutinho can provide 20 goals a season and have enough drive and defensive ability

The same Arsenal that generally have one of the best defensive records in the league?Originally posted by Cormack74 View PostWas listening to Stuart Robson talking about Wenger on the radio over lunch.
Robson said it wouldn't matter if Arsenal had the best 4 defenders in the world their defence wouldn't improve because defending is mostly about organisation and Wenger doesn't do any.
I wonder if BR does . . . . I think I know the answer.

Nonsense. Gerrard has no positional sense in central midfield so Lucas is running around in circles trying to cover. It's noticeable that when Lucas doesn't play alongside Gerrard, but with a more positionally-aware player (basically anyone else), he always seems to play well.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostI remember Gullit benching Shearer when he was no longer suited to his system. Think Gullit was sacked within a week. Clearly the managing of a legend is a tricky business. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being daft.
Don't think Gerrard was the reason we lost anyway. More him playing with Lucas not helping.
Unfortunately Gerrard is now a liability whenever he plays. I'm struggling to think of his last very good performance but I can list lots of bad ones.

Despite his quality, a lot of people felt the team often performed better when he was out. Players seemed to take more responsibility. Sort the strikers and we've got the old Stevie's goals covered with our forwards.Originally posted by Norbs View PostNot only that but Gerrard is in a league of his own. I can't think of another player thatdoesdid what he does in the world game.
We need to focus on finding the players to balance out our midfield as opposed to finding a player that no longer exists
Then what we actually need is another Xabi.
Which is good news for us. Whether BR stays or goes, in terms if personnel we're not that far off.
(I hope he stays)Last edited by BG1973; 03-01-15, 07:21 AM.

The one game this season when we truly replicated last year was Spurs away. In that game was had the pace of Sturridge in behind, Sterling joining him and getting in the box, whilst Mario linked with Sturridge and whilst his finishing was woeful, he caused them all sorts of problems. In that game Gerrard was DM and thinking back I think his passing was generally poor, but he seemed to cut out a lot of danger and had IMO his best defensive game at DM.Originally posted by Redspin View PostNonsense. Since then we've had a whole host of issues and not one midfield combination looked decent until we switched the formation around. Once again we got pace in behind and looked like a decent proposition once more. I could go all day, but back on point, Gerrrad is suitable as a lone DM with pace ahead of him. He's also suitable at second DM in an attacking side if he doesn't partner Lucas.
Lucas & Gerrard should not start in the same central midfield pairing. This is the premier league and you can't get away with limited pace in midfield. You can get away with it if they're surrounded by world beaters, or if one of them is excellent at reading the game. I can't remember who it was, but they posted that once Lucas gets a booking in a game he becomes a passenger. To my mind he only picks up bookings early on when he's generally fatigued. He should never have started v Leicester.Forwards.......
