he just hasn't been the same since that slip. Hate mentioning it but seems to be the case.

Without our front players making runs behind defenders Gerrard is wasted in that position. He can turn defence to attack in one pass but without the running that now consists of long balls to right wing which amount to nothing. He does not screen the defence nor is his short passing fast or incisive enough.
He has looked better when pushed further up this season. Indeed he nearly redeemed us yesterday with the shot which should have brought a penalty. I don't he is anywhere near finished for us but is not performing in the current role.

Steven Gerrard was really good last year in that position in front of the defence with Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson ahead of him doing his work for him. Now Jordan doesn't look anywhere near the player he did last season and opposition teams are suffocating Gerrard when he has the ball.
A lot of defensive midfielders aren't also the teams playmaker but that's what Steven Gerrard is trying to do. He is trying his best to get the team going but by trying to make the play he is ignoring his main role which is to protect the back four.
Other dm's like Fernando and matic dont look to get involved with the play too much. They leave that to the other players like fabregas and toure. By trying to combine both hes doing neither well. Perhaps emre can can be the playmaker and Steven can just sit tight and keep it simple.

You can see his confidence is shot, can you blame him after what happened last year?
Poor ****er is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and the expectation of the club and its millions of fans, no doubt he feels personally responsible for that slip last year. To be completely honest, I don't think he is ever going to recover from it.
The **** and abuse he gets from opposition fans on a weekly basis about falling on his arse must be getting to him, it'd get to to me and I'm sure anyone for that matter.
Losing the title like that has clearly shattered Steven Gerrard, he looked tired anyway but mentally and physically he looks annihilated. It's bad management by Rodgers playing him, he needs a break from the game for a month if not longer to get positive, think about things and move forward with his life. If he doesn't do that he won't recover.Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."

Always, keep your face to the sun, and shadows will fall behind you.

Not sure he really was good last year in that position to be honest. He was awesome from an attacking perspective but defensively he wasn't anything special....we conceded too many goals last year as well - only masked by our awesome attacking play...
(By the way, it was a midfield 3 of Gerrard Henderson and Coutinho for most of the second half of last year)

He played better last season that he is currently. Also he's under more pressure now from the opposition because they have less to worry about going the other way. But hes a big player and he should be able to work something out.Originally posted by frank the tank View PostNot sure he really was good last year in that position to be honest. Not even Gerrard is capable of playing where he does.Originally posted by Fierce View PostThis
But not this
Gerrard is blatantly not the player he used to be, and this season doesn't look to be the force he was last season either
Problem is, right here right now, not one of our midfielders are capable of playing where he does.
Can is the only potential option but otherwise I wouldn't like to see anybody else there but Gerrard

He played better from an attacking perspective - starting counter attacks that were finished off but clinical attacking players. Im not so sure he was a defensive master by any means though. Thats just my opinion.Originally posted by alonso14 View PostHe played better last season that he is currently. The best performance i can remember by any midfield of ours in the last year or two is last seasons away game at spurs. When SG was sat in the sky studio. Lucas Allen and Hendo didnt give them a kick of the ball.....i think that with gerrard in front of them is what is needed now...

I asked that question the season Alonso left. During that summer I wasn't fussed as I thought we had Gerrard who could easily do what Alonso does and then some. The penny dropped the following season when his short range passing didn't meet up to my expectations.Originally posted by Norbs View PostHis short passing is very poor. Not sure why such basics don't come naturally to such a gifted pinpoint passer.
Being younger he obviously covered that with his legend. But as the years roll by he never once tried to learn what this short passing malarky was about unless he was trying one two's on the edge of the area. One tit for another.
