Does not mean he cannot be criticised for a poor performance or a string of poor performances.
He was not the only poor performer tonight, but he certainly was one of them.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

he didnt play well but i dont think he was terrible either. Put it this way, if Sterling puts that one-on-one chance away to make it 3-1, then gerrard is a class act for playing that through ball..... it's a very fine margin....Originally posted by Jaco_Pastorious View PostDoes not mean he cannot be criticised for a poor performance or a string of poor performances.

I was happy to see SG play at the tip of the diamond last night to be honest. I think that Coutinho is a smashing player but for me he is most effective when he is part of the middle-3 - with 3 or 4 players in front of him to pick out. But at the moment we are not good enough defensively to include Coutinho back there - because it leaves the whole pitch too open..... it will be interesting when Sturridge finally returns to the team - because Sterling as the #10 behind Sturridge and Balotelli could be deadly.
To be honest, last night I was just happy that Gerrard wasn't the sitting midfielder. I would play Lucas for the next few games......and rotate Gerrard with Joe Allen or Henderson....

First name on the teamsheet! We might as well forget any notion he's not playing, just a case of where can we hide him?Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostSurely Gerrard at least needs to be rested for the next game?
Time to update my signature I believe. Its a sad one this time.

The bloke must be cut to bits inside.Originally posted by Slinky Skills View PostGet off his back lads ffs. He's an LFC legend, at least show him a little respect.
To fight for soooo long at a club he loves to regain the holy grail, and to get sooooo close, only for THAT to happen, i don't blame him for a bad start to his season at all.
He was sooo deperate for us to do it, motivating the team before and after games just as he has for a decade, only for him to be the one that 'let it slip' first, it's hurting him, of that i have no doubt, regardless of what he or anyone else says, it's having an effect, and probably not just on him.

I think that is part of the issue. That and a disappointing World Cup at the end of his international career.Originally posted by Vermilion View PostThe bloke must be cut to bits inside.
He will come through this period and deliver consistently good performances again but (a) how he plays has to evolve a bit first and (b) personally I think he'll need to freshen up and I suspect that means a move abroad to a slower league.

The whole team but especially Gerrard looks sluggish and unfit. Stevie cannot keep up with the pace of the game anymore. Several times last night he gave up the chase. If somehow we miraculously finish fourth this season, he should do the honourable thing and retire. He always will be a legend for us but at the moment he's just a ghost.

He's 35 at the end of the season, he shouldn't be a consistent component of the squad. We need to rebuild and which ever way you put it he is not part of our future. It's ludicrous to suggest otherwise. Midfielders at his age are not key players for their teams, Xavi is being phased out, Giggs was, Scholes, etc. etc.Originally posted by Paul12 View PostI think that is part of the issue. And I wasn't suggesting otherwise. I had assumed Can was bought to reduce Gerrard's workload this season and thereby start the phase out, but he - as someone else said - looks more like a poor man's Henderson. So the Club appears to have failed to recognise the need to tackle the Gerrard-issue in the summer. perhaps no surprise there because they also thought the purchases we have made would strengthen the defence, yet a leaky sieve would be more water-tight than what we are having to call our defence. And why there seems to have been no planning for Suarez's departure also fools me, unless Lallana etc were really replacements rather than squad additions.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostHe's 35 at the end of the season, he shouldn't be a consistent component of the squad. I wouldnt go overboard with the lad but I'd like to see how he does with a run of gamesBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
