Allens stats were similar and he "apparently" played well in midfield

I always had doubts about Gerrard in that role but last season he did surprise me he was certainly more capable than I believed

This season hes looked poor, but then who in the squad hasnt???

Allen wasn't playing in the front of the defence, and I remember at least one interception from him. Gerrard on the hand has the most key passes, so why not move him closer to the final third?

I have no idea

My main argument with Gerrard is I havent a problem moving him provided you are not putting Henderson, Can or Allen there

The only player I'd trust other than Gerrard in that holding role is Lucas

As for Allen, we know Gerrard is playing **** and you can use those stats to back that up but please dont try and tell me Allen played well when his stats are only marginally better than Gerrard

The team’s famous leader, the driving force, isn’t setting much of an example. He certainly isn’t doing much of what is supposed to now be his main job - that of a defensive midfielder. Gerrard tackles less this season than last (2.9 to 1.8), he makes fewer interceptions (1.4 to 0.6), he fouls much less (1 to 0.2) - which indicates some fire has gone from his game - and is beaten much more by dribblers (up to 0.9). Quite simply, Gerrard is not looking cut out for that role.

Skrtel and Lovren seem mismatched as well.

See things like that only go to re-enforce my belief that changing Gerrard doesnt all of a sudden make everything hunkydory in terms of an ability to defend as a unit

I still think the biggest problem with him now is he is vacating that central position more than he did last year

It was always a failing for him its why Rafa punted him 20 yards forward, last year he curbed that somewhat. This year its back with vengeance

Could well be true. If we want to go back to basics I'd say play a midfield three of:

Lucas
Henderson - Can

And put Gerrard on the bench and sub him on in games, preferably as an AM.

joe allen played well against palace and i dont understand why he was taken off. by doing that we are asking gerrard to do even more covering than before.

You trust Gerrard in the holding role??!!! He is doing exactly the same in that position as he did last year. Now we are just losing 3-1 instead of pulling a 3-5. Nothing has changed.
