Give you a second chance after your dreams are crushed

Go get a bloody normal job like a regular person FFS. Go to Uni if you want to strive for a higher level job. This woe is me attitude from footballers who don't make it is really hard to empathise with

Maybe after all their years of involvement with the game they would be ideal candidates to become referees, or would that only be increasing their anguish

Harsh,Got to remember these are still kids, Kids who will have dreamt big, Imagine the heartbreak at that age of leaving your boyhood club?

I imagine those who played alongside those who do make it, must be hard to take too.

I am sure there are plenty, I know a couple of ex pro's/academy rejects who finished early and went on and had great careers but i am sure there are countless others who need a leg up.

I think its a fantastic thing for Trent to do.

And a lot of them have been pressured and pushed by their parents who may now be dissappointed and angry that their potential meal ticket has gone.

Why do they "need a leg up"?? Because they failed at something?

This is what im getting at, why should a footballer get special treatment in any facet of life? Its absurd. Sure, they'd be extremely disappointed that they didnt "make it". But thats the case with literally any career. ****, i was gutted when i didnt get my dream job. I was gutted when we didnt win a dream client and a huge budget brief...you get on with it though don't you??

Maybe the bigger deal here is the lack of education within footballers. Are these guys just giving up on all schooling because they're good at football at 14 and will definitely be in the less than 1% that make it at a big club? Maybe having a back up plan is a good idea for these kids?

So bizarre that you can make your own points completely redundant in the final paragraph of your own post.

Sure, they’ve been institutionalised in a system that sacrifices conventional education and pretty much everything else in a young persons life from the point they can run up until they’re in their mid teens. But why don’t they go to uni, why don’t they just become a doctor etc? **** their failed asses and all thought of trying to help them fulfil their potential and get the next 60+ years of their life on track.

It is a bit like the pit closures in the 80s. The miners only real had one skillset (often passed down from many generations), and once that profession was taken away from them they had no real transferable skills. What were they supposed to do next? They were all screwed by you know who essentially.

I realise teenage wannabe footballers are tougher to sympathise with than the miners but these are still young people who have dedicated their educational years to one goal and one goal only. When that goal doesn't work out they really must be at a loss for what to do next. They are left not only dealing with crushing rejection, they basically have to start over with no back up plan.

Really this just highlights another area that clubs have neglected. They are failing these kids because it is not directly in their interests to help them. It shouldn't be on someone like Trent to step in and do something about it, it should be on the clubs and the FA.

I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

But i am am sure you carried on and maybe hit a dream job on day or the big brief and you are older to understand.

Big difference to getting your one and only dream crushed, were you groomed from 5 to beleive you were going to be the best Architect, Mcdonallds worker, Accountant, DOctor whatever you are? a single focus got to hurt.

100%, kids who prioritised their footballing dream ahead of the best alternative conventional career path. I know academy players who gave everything for their dream from the age of 5 or 6 only to fail and be dropped at 15 or 16.

Whatever happened they're still people and usually kids, so they're obviously heartbroken.

Local lad to me played local Rugby and got injured. Had to stop playing. Even coaching wasn't enough for him, took his own life a month or so ago leaving behind devastated mum, dad, brother and sister.

I remember having a conversation with my son when he was about 13 and he was playing football at a reasonable level , attending a private school & having music lessons to play bass guitar. He said Dad all my teachers & coaches tell me to practice more, to study more etc & he came to the realization that he was never going to play for Liverpool or make a living from his football & never going to live comfortably as a bass guitarist so he decided to stop his music lessons & concentrate on his studies as he knew that was his best chance of living out his dreams. It was a very mature decision & one that he had to make. I loved watching my son play football but never pressured him or condemned him for the decision he made but I’ve seen the ugly side of parents living out there lives through their kids.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

I know one family that all moved to Barcelona when their 8 year old was signed by the club. Released at 12, signed by Liverpool, released at 14. Parents were pushy, now the kid is 19 and struggling in a dead end job.
