Hendo is too slow to cover, plus other teams are aware of the weakness. Added to the general midfield disfunction not covering the defence

When he plays as inverted fullback we're able to overload the midfield. It gives him even more options and and even freer role in "midfield". Comes with it's negatives as teams can exploit out right flank of course.
If he was to move to midfield full time then I'm not sure he'd be quite as free to be the playmaker as he is now.
That's how I see it anyway.

Only fair to remember he was never a right back and was converted as that was the most likely pathway to the first team. Was always going to be the case he wasn't going to be a great defender. He really went to **** this year though, for whatever reason.Originally posted by Harv View Posthe has never been good defensively. Its been the one stick to beat him with since he came into the side - its just the other stuff he did was so good that you let it slide and the rest of the team was functioning like a well oiled machine.

Thats definitely the case but there are other ways to create a numerical advantage to in the midfield area of the field. Having such high fullbacks for example who play just ahead of the deeper lying midfielders when in possession.Originally posted by Pablo View PostWhen he plays as inverted fullback we're able to overload the midfield. That was the case with the team in their prime, basically only had two CBs and Fabinho in front of them and very high fullbacks when attacking.
The formations don’t really matter that much but the style and patterns of movement do and I’m not sure long term about Konate having to cover so much space vacated by his RB when he goes into midfield.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

A couple of times the way he received the ball and subsequently moved away from the Leicester player gave me proper prime Thiago vibes.Originally posted by danperkins View PostHe was outstanding last night, MOTM imo. When he steps into midfield, he is so comfortable and can pick passes out that none of the other lads can.

Yeah that dinked ball he put over the defence for Gakpo was amazing, pity it wasn’t put away as it would have been some goal.Originally posted by danperkins View PostHe was outstanding last night, MOTM imo. Got to agree with what Liverpool said though, does this all go to **** when he misses a game?
Or when we have a RCB playing that is not as quick, strong and mobile as Konate.
Is why I think this is a get to the end of the season tweak rather than a full on change.
It relies a hell of a lot on the LCM (and hopefully in the future a RCM of quality) reducing turnovers, having a DM there to cover TAA in the middle and a RCB quick enough and good enough at reading the game to cover basically the RCB and RB slots.
Am also not totally convinced about the set up if it were to be put under serious pressure by a City level team or a lot of the CL level teams.
Then again maybe the same set up with real top class midfielders dropped into it will become similar to haw City looked prior to this season when Cancelo was playing the the exact same inverted role that TAA is in now to cause overloads and increase turnovers in favour of City.
What does stand out as a big difference between our inverted full back system and that of City prior to this season is that they did not have to rely on their keeper a lot using it over the course of two to three seasons, whereas we are seeing a lot of chances being created against us even by weaker teams and Alisson is still having to make a greater number of saves than expected due to us having more shots on our goal ( in terms of average number of shots per game) than in seasons past.
And what is also a bit of a worry is that the average number of shots on our goal has not dropped dramatically during this great run of wins compared to earlier in the season, it is just that Alisson is on a freakish run of form (as he has pretty much on for a hell of a long time) vs the number of shots he faces.
Offensively we look far more cohesive in transition so that is helping to cover up a lot of cracks as if Alisson's goalkeeping and the outstanding turnover reducing press resistant stuff being done by Jones.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
