I think those who criticise his defending get frustrated as he looks so casual when players get past him at times & interpret that as not giving a ****, which we all know is BS. You don’t become the Vice Captain of our great club if you’ve got a bad attitude. He played a lot in midfield as a kid & the theory I read somewhere was they started playing him at RB in the academy to improve the defensive side of his game. Jurgen turned him into an outstanding WB but that requires a defensively solid RM & RCB ro cover when he gets forward. It’s a demanding position and not just on Trent.

I think there’s a lot of confirmation bias, from other fans. They’ve pushed the narrative that he’s poor defensively and any time he makes any mistake they go overboard.

Last season he was poor defensively, or I guess we were as a team, but it seemed we conceded so many goals from his side. I think this season has (so far) been his best (so far). He’s been consistently very good, and has a few very important goals and assists. If we do win the league, his goals against city and fulham will be 2 that will be highlighted as critical to us doing it. Just a pity he didn’t bury that one against arsenal at anfield, that would have been another one!

I had to laugh at the comments on BBC about how he was a little suspect defensively and that England should play him in midfield where he'd not be exposed because England have some very good RB options who are rock solid defensively including Reece James

I find it amazing the scrutiny TAA gets but the amount of **** James gets away with.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

There’s a touch of the Xabi’s in his passing there.

He did get owned two or three times in quick succession, but that was also just after he got a knock to the thigh and was holding it so might well have been him being slow on the turn whilst trying to walk off the sore spot.

Fantastic subbing on of Bradley by Klopp though. Saw we had gaps on the right side and switched to more of less a flat back four by bringing Bradley on and the effect of Martinelli coming on was negated.

Konate was awesome last night along with Quansah not putting a foot wrong. Gomez played well too.

Think the first half performance was as simple as coming up against a very good team that outplayed and outfought us, but the second half we tweaked things and built on the raw grit the three defenders had been showing.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

He got done by Marty twice but it happens & I thought he was excellent. He is much improved in recent times. He's never going to be a top defender & we did see once again how much work Konate had to put in last night which worries me as he's a bit fragile. ****ing hell though Trent is a special talent with a football. The guy has to have one of, if not the best strike of a ball I have ever seen. Only really KDB that can match him imo.

He does get beaten 1-on-1 a little too often. I think it is hard to argue against that. Martinelli is one of the best at that though, so a tough opponent!

It doesn't tend to cost us too often though, and the positives you get out of him massively outweigh that so it's not an issue.

I agree they outplayed us, but not sure they outfought us. I loved the first half in terms of how we fought and put bodies on the line with blocks etc. You need to have a bit of that from time to time. Obvs would be awesome if we were dominating games home and away from start to finish, but we absorbed the best Arsenal could throw at us, didn't concede grew into the game and won it. Classic away performance.

Yeah that first half was a bit strange. No doubt they were on top, but I was never overly worried. I thought we fought for everything, and kept ourselves in the game reasonably comfortably.

I think Arsenal's obvious weakness is still mentality. They are a really good team these days, but if things don't go their way, and they don't take their chances, they can struggle.

I know they are after a striker, and that makes sense as they could do with killing games off more often, but I still don't think they have the mentality of winners that City, and hopefully we do!

Yeah, definitely agree, though they were so soft and fragile in everything too.

                            He's ****in brilliant

It must be tempting for Jurgen to move him into midfield on a perm basis once Robbo and Tsimikas are back as Gomez looks brilliant at left full back now as well so surely could also be a future perm right back.

Bradley looks good too. Pity that Ramsay has had big injury issues as he looked like he could be a very good player.

We have some brilliant young players coming along

Lots of competition in midfield now mind, Jones is looking really good too. Endo isn't a long term solution but I think we'd have to spend a fortune to replace him right now

Assuming he continues his form when he's back from the Asian Cup, and Bradley/Gomez take the RB slot; what is our best midfield?

                              TAA Endo Szoboszlai ?

                              MacAllister, Jones, Gravenberch, Elliot

That's 4x very high quality players not starting
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

Loads of options now which is great - out of the lot of them, Jones is the one for me. He sets the press and expectations better than all of them.

I don't think we have a best 3 now - depends on opposition I guess.

What an incredible summer though for recruitment.

And not a mention of Thiago either
