Not really seeing people going OTT with the criticism tbh. He has been poor for a lot of this season and people are just saying what they can see with their own eyes. There may be a number of underlying reasons why his form has dropped off so much, but on the pitch it still boils down to him being average at best by "normal" standards and very poor by the standards he has set.
I do not think (and hope) that anyone is being silly and calling him a **** player or trying to make him a scapegoat like we have seen this season and other seasons whne a few players each season seem to be picked to be insulted and blamed for everything that goes wrong.
But Trent has not been playing well in general (he had a few games here and there where it looked like he was right back at it but they were the exception this season so far) and as such people will comment on it and will, hopefully, do so in a manner that does not devolve into things like "Trent is ****"
The other thing is that Trent, along with four or five of the other underperformers, is a senior player in our team despite his age, and we need to be able to look at those senior experienced first teamers to be the ones that pull the new guys along and who guide our back up players.
So far this season Trent is also part of that group of nailed on first teamers that are both underperforming in their own play and underperforming in terms of hanging the ressies and new guys out to dry a bit too.
So I do think his play is open for some discussion and when the play is below par that it is open to reasonable discussion/criticism.
The flip side of all of that is Trent is a player that I expect is going to go totally in the other direction again at some point and just start reeling off game after game of performances that are more his level. Maybe he will do that this season or maybe this is the "difficult" season that he learns much more from that the good seasons and come next season he is back with a vengence.
