Chelsea bid £35m for Torres, we bid £20m for Carroll. Both about accurate for the market at the time and the circumstances of each club. Newcastle realised we were desperate to sign Carroll with it being deadline day and said they wanted more. We decided that we wanted £15m plus Carroll based on initial valuations, kept going back to Chelsea as Newcastle demanded more and more for Carroll, and eventually Chelsea paid us £50m for Torres. Very odd circumstances, that led to both Torres and Carroll being saddled with inflated fees that the press could use to beat them with.
