I've warmed to the idea of Downing much more than Henderson, too. He can fulfil the Riera role, a player I always though did a good job.

Yeah that's fair enough, you're right there wasn't one on here screaming from the rooftops for us to sign Downing.

I always saw him as a fair bit better than average though, just maybe not quite good enough for a Champions League contender like ourselves.

To be honest I'm buying into this whole Moneyball approach and seeing just how good his stats were over the past few seasons did make me change my mind.

If the stats are right then he is one of those deceptively productive footballers and over the course of the season the stats tell us he's going to create a ****load of chances for Carroll and Suarez, and will barely ever miss a game injured

Time will tell as they say.
At the risk of mugging myself off I'm pretty sure i posted that i thought he would be a great signing for us in the Downing thread when we were first linked

I'm too old to be drawing up personal transer wishlists!!

I was underwhelmed when we were linked with him 3-4 years ago under Rafa, since then he has improved his consistancy and end product no end

He's unspectacular so unlikely to make the wishlist of many fans. But that doesn't make him average I think.

The only scale where he'd be considered average is when you compare to top, top internationals. He's English though, so that's almost a given.

I certainly think he's better than average compared to most players in our squad, as he's already starting to show. By definition therefore he improves the squad.
            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

The stats certainly back that up.

And yes he definitely improves the squad. Big time, but then I thought the loss of Riera substantially weakened us. He brought more value to the side than his actual level of ability, if that makes sense. Hopefully Downing can do the same. Some nice delivery yesterday, although he seems very one dimensional when going 1 v 1 with a full back.

Yes, he doesn't seem to have much trickery so he needs a good fullback to help make space. In that respect some of the interplay yesterday between him, Adam and Aurelio was encouraging.

Aye it was. 3 left footers. We could feasibly field a team with exactly 50% left footers - Agger, Aurelio, Adam, Downing & Carroll. Nice balance.

Is Downing a better player than Riera was for us?

Downing is quicker and has a better cross. But Riera had more skill and a better shot.

Personally I don't think there's much in it. But we got about £3m for Riera (admittedly a dick head and far less professional than 'Stewie') while we paid £20m for Downing.

Must admit to being pleasantly surprised by Downing in friendlies so far.

Even more important, with Lucas in for Spearing, we'd have started with all ten outfield players whose surnames all begin with a letter in the first half of the alphabet (and not even M!). What's more four of them were A's.

                          Adam
                          Agger
                          Aquilani
                          Aurelio
                          Carragher
                          Carroll
                          Downing
                          Henderson
                          Johnson
                          Lucas

And of course the only keeper we've signed - yes, a D.

That's not coincidence. Dalglish knows what he's doing. Remember the golden summer when we brought in Aldridge, Barnes and Beardsley.

It's deja vu all over again.

How much did money come into these deals? IIRC Rafa was linked with Downing for a while. We signed Riera for ~£8m within a year Downing was going to Villa for £12m. Is there a chance that at the time we got Riera because we couldn't afford Downing? If it were the case the club could have saved itself about £13m
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
