[The Bodge]You are doing Luke Young a great dis-service there[The Bodge]Originally posted by Kenneth View PostNot trying to defend Downing, but I don't suppose he's had that much experience of playing in front of such an attacking fullback as Enrique. Maybe for England, but then he's never really done it for them either.

That's a good point actually.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostNot trying to defend Downing, but I don't suppose he's had that much experience of playing in front of such an attacking fullback as Enrique. Maybe for England, but then he's never really done it for them either.
Enrique has a presence about him and is making the left-hand side his own. Downing looks almost embarrassed to be there sometimes with Enrique running that side. He's certainly holding back on something and I think it's a confidence issue.

Not seeing anywhere near enough from him to be honest. Not only does he lack spark, but he seems to lack hunger and desire. He goes for the easy option far too often.
Today, i saw him chasing an overhit pass half heartedly and then allowing his defender to shield it into touch without any pressure on him. And for an established PL player and international, he lacks game intelligence. Not enough aggression or desire. Just not good enough i'm afraid. It says everything that Enrique, a leftback, put in a better left wing performance than Downing (and does so quite often).

I've never been that hot on him frankly, I think he could be a decent player but he lacks bottle more than anything
By bottle I dont mean going flying in to tackles I mean taking responsibility and having a go rather than leaving it for others, I dont think hes lacking in intelligence just he should do more himself.
Contrast his efforts to that of Adam or as you mentioned Enrique and its clear the lad has to do moreBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

Enrique's ****ing brilliant and by far our greatest threat down that side.
It was only a surreal superhuman performance from Lucas that pipped Enrique for MOTM match IMO opinion.

That's what i meant by taking the easy option - he doesnt want to take responsibility in any given situation, and instead prefers the easy simple ball and waiting for someone else to step up and make something happen.
I dont know what it is, maybe a lack of confidence, maybe a lack of hunger, but whatever it is, he isnt a kid who will develop in the next 4-5 years, he's supposed to be the 'finished article'. Major letdown so far.

He started off promising (surprisingly as I didnt expect much from him) but has faded badly
