I think his enrique partnership is turning into a negative 1, hes uses him too much and they stand too close can easily mark the both with 1 player at times, needs to find more space
Aye they make the same runs at times too. Had high hopes for them as a partnership but they've not clicked.

Not trying to defend Downing, but I don't suppose he's had that much experience of playing in front of such an attacking fullback as Enrique. Maybe for England, but then he's never really done it for them either.

          That's a good point actually.

Enrique has a presence about him and is making the left-hand side his own. Downing looks almost embarrassed to be there sometimes with Enrique running that side. He's certainly holding back on something and I think it's a confidence issue.

Let's get The Knoch back to give Downing a boost.

The Konch would give me a boost. And I'm very right footed!

Not seeing anywhere near enough from him to be honest. Not only does he lack spark, but he seems to lack hunger and desire. He goes for the easy option far too often.

Today, i saw him chasing an overhit pass half heartedly and then allowing his defender to shield it into touch without any pressure on him. And for an established PL player and international, he lacks game intelligence. Not enough aggression or desire. Just not good enough i'm afraid. It says everything that Enrique, a leftback, put in a better left wing performance than Downing (and does so quite often).

                    Aye.

Just watched the game on telly and reinforces what I thought at the game.

Enrique's ****ing brilliant and by far our greatest threat down that side.

Agreed Downing doesnt do enough for me

I've never been that hot on him frankly, I think he could be a decent player but he lacks bottle more than anything

By bottle I dont mean going flying in to tackles I mean taking responsibility and having a go rather than leaving it for others, I dont think hes lacking in intelligence just he should do more himself.

Contrast his efforts to that of Adam or as you mentioned Enrique and its clear the lad has to do more

It was only a surreal superhuman performance from Lucas that pipped Enrique for MOTM match IMO opinion.

Spot on, couldn't have put it better myself.
                          We come not to play.

That's what i meant by taking the easy option - he doesnt want to take responsibility in any given situation, and instead prefers the easy simple ball and waiting for someone else to step up and make something happen.

I dont know what it is, maybe a lack of confidence, maybe a lack of hunger, but whatever it is, he isnt a kid who will develop in the next 4-5 years, he's supposed to be the 'finished article'. Major letdown so far.

Hes the only player who has gone backwards in the last few weeks

He started off promising (surprisingly as I didnt expect much from him) but has faded badly

Whilst others have improved their play (yes even Carroll)
