That was absolutely dire, the worst performance I have seen in a long time, reminded me of the last season under Houllier when we were just awful to watch.
I am sick and tired of us playing hoof football...the amount of times Hyypia and Carragher just played it long to Crouch tonight was embarrassing. But I don't lay the blame on them the problem lies with our midfield and has done for a long time. Tonight both Stevie and Momo hardly ever showed for the ball when one of the CB's had...instead most of the time they turned their backs on the play and didn't give the CB's an option to play it out.
And its not just Stevie and Momo who did it...it happens when Alonso and Mascher play as well. For me this is the biggest issue with our team at present as your CM players should be dictating the pace of the game, looking to build from the back, always be available for the simple pass etc... our CM should be encouraged to get on the ball, make themselves available when the CB's have it...dictate the game...build the play up. All our CM are capable of doing this apart from maybe Momo...in fact in Alonso I think we have one of the most capable CM's in Europe who has the ability to control a game from the center of the park.
So why don't we play like this? IMO its simply because Rafa does not encourage it...in fact I suspect he actively discourages this kind of play. In his interviews you always hear him talking about working hard, winning the second balls which are all vitally important...but there is a whole other side to the game and thats the creative side which he seems to ignore. I am hoping we will turn it around and start to play better more constructive football and get back into the winning ways but I am not confident. This is not just based on tonight or indeed the last 5 games...but on the basis of the last 3 years under Rafa.

Sorry but the defence is the key to the problem. At the end the difference between the teams was distribution from defence. Hyppia, Carra and Riise only know one type of pass, the long ball to Peter Crouch. Marseille tried to play football, our defence went for the lazy option. What is with this long ball approach. Stevie G was poor, Sissoko was rubbish, the rest did nothing, but for me Sami Hyppia, legend though he is, is causing us a lot of problems at the back. The whole team gets affected and we end up spread too thin across the pitch and can't play a pressing game. For me we are paying for not breaking the bank for a central defender in the summer. We have to get someone in in January.
