Great to compare the first page of this thread to recent pages to see how far he has come from the reserves to England starter

Aside from that I was so impressed by Sterling, he really announced himself to the world. Couldn't be happier for him and made up that he's ours
              As an Englishman, absolutely this.

I just cringe whenever the media mention England ever. The Ingerland chants, singing the national anthem during the match, Land of Hope and Glory, etc. It's all just jingoism wrapped up as patriotism. They pride themselves on being different to other country's supporters, but should be ashamed instead.

Though, much as I hate Roy, I'm up for this World Cup like I haven't been in ages. Probably all the LFC players.

I realised how much I hate nationalism and one of the most head shaking moments for me was seeing the Brasil team during the national anthem. Even worse is seeing some of the English players forcing themselves to mumble God Save the Queen.

Anyway, micro rant over and back on topic, Raheem was amazing!

A bit of Nationalism is fine in sport, pretty much the only time it is though IMO. England has got to be one of the only countries in the world who associates its flag with racism. Its a shame that its been claimed by idiots.

It's got to do with their history and the fact there's still a lot of things which still evokes it. The monarchy, Sir Oswald Moseley etc ...

I disagree. IMO all Nationalism is wrong, Patriotism is different.

Saw this and thought it summed up the difference for me:

Nationalism - Excessive patriotism in one’s country. Nationalists believe that their interests, cultural and social values, or religion is superior to all others on the planet. Nationalists usually have no regard for other countries or cultures that are different from their own and believe they are superior to all others.

Patriotism - Pride in one’s country and pride in the accomplishments or achievements of one’s country, but not in an extreme way like nationalism (i.e. people who are patriotic love their country but not in a way that they think they are superior to people in other countries).

If you define nationalism as 'excessive' anything then of course it's wrong by definition.

Well, patriotism and nationalism are not exactly the same thing.

                            1. spirit or aspirations common to the whole of a nation.
                            2. devotion and loyalty to one's own country; patriotism.
                            3. excessive patriotism; chauvinism.
                            4. the desire for national advancement or political independence.
                            5. the policy or doctrine of asserting the interests of one's own nation viewed as separate from the interests of other nations or the common interests of all nations.

The one I highlighted is how I see it in relation to sport.
