I think the timing is ideal.
He is on the decline, he won't be a regular starter, he's on massive money, and he's not going to be the influential on the pitch captain we need.
It would be awkward to drop him as captain so maybe this is an easy way to deal with the issue.
Obviously it means we need to quickly sort some additional cover, with henderson, fabinho, and also possibly thiago on their way out. It's not like henderson has been making a massive contribution! The same for thiago given his lack of availability...
Fabinho is really the only one we would have kept, but his iffy season last year suggests we've had the best of his years and it's time to move him on.

If it is indeed a mins guarantee, I don't think we can give him that as he's just not good enough anymore. I'm sure he could still have a role but imo he cannot be captain if he isn't a mainstay and with the way we want and need to play, he isn't what is required to be a mainstay. It is very inconvenient timing. I'm sure he could go to several other clubs that might not pay him treble his wages but at least he won't be selling his and legacy... oh and he still be very very very rich as will his children and his children's children.

Another side to the experience and leadership debate could be giving other players more responsibility and a good refresh of who the leaders are. We all know you need to freshen up the squad to challenge players and keep the team progressing but what about the leadership group.

We saw how much of an impact the change in formation had to finish last season and also how players thrived in it. Look at Trent and how important he was to that change, he thrived under it and took the responsibility of being the focal point brilliantly.

Maybe having players like Virgil and Robbo, for example, take over as the new leaders would lift them to new levels, give them new responsibilities and to challenged.

Also new ideas from the leadership group about building that team spirit and togetherness. This isn’t a knock on Milner and Henderson, just a positive take on what a big change could mean.

VVD and Robertson were already in the leadership group last season it consisted of Henderson, Milner, VVD, Alisson, TAA and Robertson. So far only one of that group has left so assuming we stick with 6 there is only one vacancy

I was thinking more about the change in responsibility going from 3rd in charge to being club captain. It’s a completely different situation and I imagine a player like Virgil would take on the added responsibility and the new challenge to lead the club and show some new growth. It could help reinvigorate him and bring out some other qualities we haven’t seen yet. Players need new challenges to continue to grow.

The captaincy debate is somewhat interesting, personally I'd give it to Trent despite giving him pelters early last season.

He doesn't come across as a leader but he's a local lad and to him it will mean something compared to the some others. Whoever Klopp picks though will be the right decision, the management team will have a clear idea based on a lot of factors we won't be aware of.
