I have to say I don't agree with this. Its easy to forget just how good together both Sami & Henchoz, and then Sami & Carra, were together. Like 5 trophies in a season and Champions League winning good respectively.

OK, maybe I will rephrase that and say it is my favourite pairing since Hansen and Lawro.

As a footballing pair of CBs who complement each other they are the best IMO since those 2. Maybe not the most effective or successful yet, but my kind of players.

BUT the Skrtel/Agger have hardly had a decent holding midfielder playing in front of them and are playing in a much weaker team.

Sami/Henchoz played in a team that was set up to defend. And Sami/Carra quite literally had the best midfield in the world playing in front of them. It's very difficult to compare the 3 pairings but I'd say they are/were alll amazing pairings. In terms of technique, the current pairing is the best by far. But the stats say Sami/Henchoz were the better pairing.

This, imo, is a perfect example of us overrating our current players. No way are Agger & Skrtel that great together. Good yes, but not great. Just watch Benteke's second goal was it the other day, shocking defending we'd never have seen with Sami & Carra in their pomp. Indeed quite a lot of the goals we've conceded this season have been down to dodgy defending, and not all of that can be blamed on lack of a holding midfielder in those games.

I like our current pair, but previously we could honestly argue we had the best CB pairing in the league, Europe even. Only with red-tinted specs could someone argue that at the moment.

Sami and Carra in their pomp played with 2 holding midfielders in front if them - one of them (Alonso) quite honestly being one of the best holding midfielders the game will ever see. Last week, Benteke was allowed to run at the centre back (Skrtel?) from a deep position which never would have happened under Benitez. And this has happened all season mainly as Allen has been the holding midfielder. I think think the tactics and lack of personnel have left our centre backs exposed on more than occasion. The shape of the team has changed completely since Lucas returned and he is not even playing at 50% of his ability yet.

Look at it another way - how many times have teams been linked with signing Skrtel and Agger - quite a lot! Clearly these 2 are highly rated even by those who are not associated with Liverpool.

I don't think he's played as well this season as he did last, nor Agger.

I cant really remember how he played. But I know a few that still moan about the backpass. In fairness it killed the start of the season for us. Imagine the confidence we would have gotten from beating the champions at the start of the season.

I don't think they are an ideal partnership. Both very good players but neither seems to dominate the area and they often seem to conspire to leave the other isolated during counter attacks.
