Possibly an unpopular opinion but I think Coates is capable of surpassing Skrtel. He is prone to loss of concentration. Quality player but Coates is going to be better in my opinion.

I don't think that's an outrageous claim tbh.

It's early days and we've all seen a lot more of Skrtel than Coates, they both have their strengths and they're prone to brainfarts.

They should be competing against eachother though and fair competion is healthy. Also, Coates looks like he could score 20 a season.

He's up against a high class field though:

Everton's John Heitinga, Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, Antonio Valencia of Manchester United, Wigan Athletic skipper Gary Caldwell, Adam Bogdan of Bolton Wanderers and Yakubu, formerly of Blackburn Rovers.

          Kompany should win easily.

I agree to be honest, Coates could well replace Skrtel he has improving to do but it looks as if he could be pushing for that starting place with Agger sooner rather than later.

If only Skrtel had launched that ball forward at the end of the City game eh. It all could be so different. A 2-1 win over the champions at Anfield in the second game of the season would have really been something to build on.

I'd like to see Coates handed more opportunities also to put some pressure on big Martin.

Coates is much better technically and more comfortable with the ball but Skrtel is more physical and faster.

Both very good options but in terms of partnership with Agger atm Skrtel is better fit.

I'm yet to be convinced of this as a consistent truth. His passing is often woeful under pressure. He is also fond of long, low odds of success, aerial balls to the flanks. I think he needs to improve a lot before there is a case for him playing in the first team.

Aye, he loves the Sami long punt but sadly he's more Carra than Sami ATM.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Sami was an excellent long passer, I think punt is an unfair description there.

Ha ha, I'll take my time and choose words more carefully in future.

But, yes he was, that was the point I was poorly making.

To clarify exactly, I don’t think Coates hoofs the ball as such. He gets his head up, looks for the pass (like Sami), but his execution isn’t just as good.

                          It's very harsh on him.

                          EDIT: Sorry, misread 'punt'.
                          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

                                Ha ha.

Remember him getting nominated but I didn't think he'd win it.

                                Well in Martin.
