I may be misunderstanding your use of 'circulating the ball' but I don't think this is a necessary truth. I think Busquets at Barcelona would be a good counter example.
I think that Lucas could and would help. I think one part of the reason is that unlike Allen he is willing and able to drop into the defensive line to cover a player going forward. My feeling is that Rodgers recent move to use a 3 CB + 2 WB formation is attempting to simulate this defensive side of his preferred formation better with the players currently at his disposal.
When I said circulating the ball I just meant moving it around to keep possession without necessarily having offensive intent
The three at the back facilitates carras and coates lack of pace so theyre not asked to cover too much ground if the fullbacks get caught high up the pitch. The thing about lucas is that if he doesnt participate inthe play which is impossible he too has to constantly adjust his position to make those angles for the triangular shapes that rodgers likes.
It means every player has to really keep moving around the ball and other players to be able to offer the diagonal pass. Depending on where the play is every player will shift his position.
If he says to lucas not to get involved and just mop up again its fine. But if the rb gets caught high up the pitch and lucas has to go across to stop their attack down that side then allen has to drop into the middle. But if allen is sitting off the play and its on the other side of the pitch we have a problem. Imo the high fullbacks are causing the defensive frailties that were seeing especially without two central dms to cover their space. One of the issues allen has is that he doesnt seem to be confortable hitting long passes.
For example alonso could play deeper to provide fullbacks more cover and still be able to contribute to the attacks even if he was 40 yarda away from the play. Nobody in that midfield duo of allen or lucas as that sort of passing range.
Three centrbacks mean less space down the flanks for the.opposition to exploit and you only need one dm.

In his post match interview he was really up front in admitting the lack of control in the first half laid squarely at his feet. I like him, he's genuine
Fair play so hopefully he has learnt that 5 at the back doesn't work with the personal we have in the team and we will not see that formation again any time soon.
Yeah Rodgers is winning me over big time. He isn't afraid to change things and make bold decisions. He is everything bar conservative and that bodes well for the future. I think he has Rafa like potential, there I've said it.

I turned away when Webb's interception led to a corner, I knew we'd concede from it. We seem fragile when the gameplan is disrupted. I'm pretty sure that most of us would've taken a draw at the start, all of us would've taken it after going behind.
He did well today. He set us up to control possession, which we did, and we were unlucky with the timing of the goal
Then he reacted to the situation and made a change which swung the game in our favour. He could've patted himself on the back after the game but chose to admit his faults. He's a perfectionist and I like that in him
