It just might work out long term though. A lot of the issues we have could have been in some way addressed with a decent transfer window, but LFC didn't have one.

    Chin up eh?
Yep we needed a decent transfer window and we didnt have one

The worrying thing is some of those we are targetting now dont strike me as contributing to a "decent" window either

We have to adjust our expectations, we're not gonna get the sort of players that we want now... that might be 12-24 months away depending on how we progress in that time.

For now, we need to improve on what we have - a winger who's braver and more intelligent than Downing, a centre mid with better fitness than Cole and a fecking forward who can score double figures a season to help Suarez out.

      That's it.

          Snobbery gets us nowhere.

Is Shane Long the sort of guy you'd bring on when you're 1-0 down at the Bernabeu or Nou Camp? No, probably not, but we're not at that level right now and he could most definitely help us with where we are right now.

Maybe Borini, by now, would have improved us as a sqaud had he stayed fit, got more used to his team mates ways, and generally settled in better.

We just don't know, he's almost still like a brand new signing imo.

Pretty much yeah, poor guy was clearly having trouble fitting into a new team and a new system and he's gonna have to start right back at the beginning when he comes back in the new year.

Sahin and Assaidi could be used to give Sterling and Allen a rest.

I get the feeling Rodgers is just saying he needs to give them a rest as a reaction to the result on Saturday and the coverage it got.

He should have realised before hand that Sterling in particularly needs to be rested more - and Allen's drop off in form should have sent his alarm bells ringing.

Assaidi has earned a few starts in the league with his cup performances, it's only fair in a squad-based game rather than play someone else out of position.

I'm not talking about going out and signing Messi or Hazard

I'm talking about signing better players than we have done that is possible but we just havent done it

                      It's possible but:

                      (A) Most of those players won't move to a non-CL squad.
                      (B) We have to watch our spending.
                      (C) We're still trimming the wage bill.

Well it's up to our scouts to spot talent that is under the radar. Rogers & these guys are getting paid the big bucks... so let's hope they earn their money. The likes of Michu,Cabaye,Ben Afra,Chicarito etc are prime examples of very good players that are bought for lesser money.

Two more wins on the bounce and LFC could be only few points away from the champs league spots & on the flip side two losses in a row and we could be right down at the relegation zone. 7 points away from the champs league spots and 7 points away from the relegation zone... tis a strange scenario.

It is what it is at the moment, everyone knows where our weaknesses lie & positions that we need to fix. Few more weeks and the January market is open for business, what i'm hoping is that with our so called easier run of games we can get some good results and push up the table. If we are in a good position come January, potential targets may look at us and think we look an attractive option once again.

The option or notion that a team is realistically challenging for champs league footie every season seems such a massive draw and IMO is the difference between getting a good player... and getting a top class player.

Anyways Rogers has some big decisions to make as regards personnel and tactics. Until the window opens we have to get Lucas match fit, get Suarez scoring again, get Sterling focused again & keep LFC in the hunt for 4th spot. That January transfer window is an opportunity for progress, huge pressure and expectation on Rogers to fix problems that even we can see.

Hope Rogers and LFC scouts have been doing their homework.
Brilliant post. Up until Rodgers said aim for second, he was saying the same. Not sure why he changed his tune, I think he should have waited until January and then had a re evaluation of where we could finish.

I applaud a manager when he says something that motivates the team, but its all a bit Rafa like when we collapsed and let the Mancs in. All well and good mouthing off, but it must be backed up with results.
                          Forwards.......

Agreed. Not many big clubs will take gambles as there isn't the need, but I would say we need to identify some talent and gamble on that as opposed to supposedly safe bets from the premier league.

We didn't collapse. We lost the game afterwards which is why the press went to town (although that also confirmed their pre-game abuse) and the perception formed in people's minds. But I read on here that we had a higher points per game ration afterwards than before. Perhaps that's wrong - by all means put me right if you know better.

If Rodgers' "second is possible" turns out to be like anything before, it's like the hubris of Houllier's dreadful "ten games from greatness" parp but even then it's on a much smaller scale.

                              And anyway, Aaron Lennon.
                              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

the same problems are affecting us being that firstly, we're toothless in the attacking positions and secondly, we are unable to keep teams at bay and give them chances to hurt us on the counter attack.

Better forward players will deal with the first one but not the second.
