Exactly, FFP isn't go to save Liverpool - it's potentially going to bury us while other people deal with it better unless we start seriously ramping up our income.Originally posted by Vermilion View PostThis is the worry, and even after the ffp settles, these people will find a way to increase turnover in some way that enables them to spend large amounts, i have no faith at all that ffp is going to be this clubs saviour, and even the playing field.

Can you clarify this point in terms of what decisions are out of his hands?Originally posted by G View PostBefore I make this point let me add the disclaimer :-I don't think we should do what Chelsea do however
Starting with Jose which was Roman's first full season,Chelsea have had 7 managers under Abramovich and have won 9 trophies in that time
Arsenal have had the same manager all that time and won the FA cup once.
The bags of cash clearly make a difference but maybe old Roman is not as bonkers as many make out.
If its not working he makes a change and backs the new man.
We made a change cos it wasn't working and haven't backed the new man.
He said himself decisions are out of his hands on transfers.

Plenty of 'decent' centre backs out there. Ashley Williams for example.

For each trophy, there's copious amounts of money (yes, that old chestnut again) being spent to release managers from their contract and then pay them off when they're sacked.Originally posted by G View PostHis trophy count adds something to the debate. He's made some poor choices but he's made some good ones too.

He can afford it so who's to say he's wrong?Originally posted by Captain Stu View PostFor each trophy, there's copious amounts of money (yes, that old chestnut again) being spent to release managers from their contract and then pay them off when they're sacked.
We've sacked a fair few ourselves and we don't have the trophies to show for it.
Yes money makes a difference but its not the be all and end all as Rafa proved,he didn't have much but he had us up there challenging Romans Multi million squad.

Ok, thanks. I interpreted his quote to mean that the final decision to sign an older player rests with the board.Originally posted by G View PostIts at the end of this article I posted from the Anfield wrap

But on transfers generally, that's the way we've always operated; it's always the board that has had the final say on whether to authorise a transfer.

Yes but the premise of the lads point is this is the same board who 2 seasons ago had no clue about football and they are now telling their manager who he can and can't sign. The same manager who said in his first press conference that he called the shots and he wouldn't have it any other way.Originally posted by BootRoom View PostOk, thanks. IMO We'll get nowhere fast adopting an 23 or under only approach and Rodgers knows it and can't do anything about it.

If he identifies someone who could be the difference between finishing 6th or finishing 4th yet he can't sign him cos he's 28 or whatever then he'll be the one getting the flack from supporters when the 22 year old he is allowed to sign doesn't make an instant impact.
Not a great set of circumstances IMO.

Van Persie is the sort of player we signed during our pomp. A player who would deliver immediate results and look like a Liverpool player straight away.
those days are over now because we won't be signing anyone over 25/26 imo unless they're a freebie transfer. I can see what fsg are trying to achieve but its very hard to be very competitive with a very young team.
But having said that we have Reina Johnson agger skrtel Enrique Lucas who are all experienced players.
its a tough one but i agree with fsg on this. As long as we keep our experienced players to help the younger ones come through.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

I find it hard to believe that this wasn't discussed during the interview process. Rodgers only came on board when FSG dropped their "continental structure" aspirations, citing that he needs to be in control, or in control of the technical group responsible for player recruitment, so I don't think they would wait untill he was under contract to spring this surprise on him.Originally posted by G View PostYes but the premise of the lads point is this is the same board who 2 seasons ago had no clue about football and they are now telling their manager who he can and can't sign. The same manager who said in his first press conference that he called the shots and he wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm not saying I agree with the policy, as I think a blanket ban on signing players over a certain age is too restrictive; I'm just not convinced by Brendan's "it's out of my hands" sighing.

And yet if we sign Butland that's Reina gone IMO. This after Rodgers sadi he's not in the market for a keeper and Reina is No.1.Originally posted by el matador View PostVan Persie is the sort of player we signed during our pomp. Jones didn't sign a new contract to be third choice and we won't spend £6m on Butland for him to be in the reserves.
Reina the only keeper with good sale value and that's what appears to be happening.
