    I agree.

    I don't know anything about Ashley Williams except that Shaggy doesn't like him. What's worrying is Shaggy was also in very early on Konchesky and various other ****e players that we or other clubs have bought.

    Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

    May the Lord bless this post.

      I've only seen Ashley Williams a few times, but he seemed decent to me. Apart from my own team I don't really bother watching other games all that often, I have too many other interests and responsibilities to spend a great deal of time watching foreign leagues and other football teams that mean little or nothing to me. I trust the manager and the scouting team to know more than myself and Shaggy etc when it comes to finding new players to improve the team!

        I wonder what Agger would look like if he played for Swansea and we watched him in the occasional game and on MOTD. Not good enough for us I suspect.

          But whilst we're not a bad team, we're not at the same level of the aforementioned and we haven't been for a while.

          United, City and Chelsea will almost certainly take the top three places. So that leaves Arsenal, Spurs and us fighting for fourth.

          The Bale & Suarez staying or going comparisons are equally as valid - both teams could keep a star player and both teams could lose a star player. If the latter happens then it'd probably depend on how the money is reinvested.

          You can't dismiss Arsenal either even thought they have a pretty average squad.

          Like I said; I'd be pleasantly surprised if we finished top four next year as it's a massive task. A proper challenge though would be progess and if we're still competing with a couple of games to go then I'd be happy enough with that.
          I wasn't saying you were saying the top 4 would rest on their laurels. I think where we differ is in the fact that you believe that those 5 squads are on some unobtainable level from ours. I'm not sure that Arsenal or Spurs will improve over the summer either. I would expect United to be weakened by the managerial change too. For me next season will be very close and that will play into our advantage. Not saying we are guaranteed or even favourites for a top 4 spot but its possible and I think at the minute pre-summer signings all of the top 5 would be possible to catch individually (I suspect at least 2 will 'get it right', most likely City, putting the title well out of reach).

            i agree with Elephant to be honest.

            I just feel that we need to seize the opportunity of this summer. Instead of getting Tom Ince, push the boat out and get Eriksen. Instead of signing someone like Ashley Williams, push the boat out and get someone like Sakho....... and bring back Alonso as well.....

            I genuinely feel that we can make some serious ground anyway - coupled with the fact that all of Man U, Citeh, Spurs, Chelsea are all going through a period of uncertainty, then we can definately break into top 4....

            I could see Chelsea going out and signing someone like Falcao. And with Mata, Oscar, Hazard behind him, then they could rip the league up. But you never know. I think Mourinho is making a mistake by going there to be honest.

            With City, then if they had any sense, they would get Rafa as their manager. To me it would be a perfect fit. They want to compete in Europe - there is no better man. He would like to live at home in Wirral. They want to build a team that gets better and better - invest in youth but in top young players. And supplement that with top signings of the here and now. He would be perfect. I'm not sure that they do have any sense though. You get the feeling that Mancini has lost the dressing room but i can see them sign someone like Pellegrini - and that would be into the unknown....

            United.....well Moyes could do well. But i have a feeling that he is their 'Hodgson' signing. And i reckon that he will be shown up in the champions league big time - hope they get someone like Atletico or Juventus in their group and get torn a new one.....

            Arsenal. If they had any sense, then they would spend big time as well. They are probably 3 top players short of having a very good team. But Wenger seems to spend money in the Houllier-mode these days.....so they could easily spunk it all away and end up 4th again.....with him claiming that to be a sucessful campaign...

            Spurs - they have had more Bale-outs than Ireland, Greece, Spain and Portugal combined in the last 18 months!! I can see Levy selling him for something like £50m, giving AVB £25m to spend and it all going tits-up. Especially if they don't qualify for the champions league this season.....

            There is a lot of uncertainty - we need to make sure that we aren't part of that uncertainty.....

              I think expecting a title challenge is unrealistic but finding ourselves in one isn't.

                  To be fair, you'd have to have been living under a rock for years - or be Roy Hodgson - not to be aware that Konchesky was a shockingly bad player

                    This. Ok, so Williams has possibly looked shoddy this season (I do not watch Swansea, so cannot comment) but could that in part be down to the players in the back line that he plays along side?

                          His summer budget supposedly will be around 20m and unless he can offload Carroll, Skrtel, Spearing, Coates and possibly Downing (my assumption is Luis will be staying) we may need to look for bargain type of deals to fill in all those gaps and that may or not may work for us.

                          Challenging for top 4 will be our goal but if that will be realistic or not will depend on what we and our biggest competitors do during the offseason.

                                It's not a bad kitty though - £20m plus, what do you reckon?

                                Carroll = £10m, hopefully a little more?
                                Skrtel = £8m ish?
                                Spearing = £2m ish?
                                Coates = £5m ish?

                                That would give us £45m to spend, which should be enough for a top centre back, top midfielder and an up and coming striker (you'll not get a top striker for less than £20m anyway). We're not going to win the league next season, but that sort of kitty should be enough to nudge us further towards the top four. Depending on wages of course.
