I personally think this is prudent business sense from FSG. Allowing Rodgers to spend money at will is a recipe for disaster, same with almost all football manager.
Obviously I would like them to give him a bit extra, but if they feel they are getting taken for a ride then I would say they are the best judges of that. Business is business, no matter what you are buying and selling.*Except Michael, who died.

Agree with all thatOriginally posted by Sarb View Post
That wasn't a go at fans who have a pop at FSG. Of course they aren't perfect and can always question what they do. It's more aimed at the ones who'll come out and say 'They've invested nothing', 'They're asset stripping' etc without looking at the facts. FSG are probably losing money at the moment, not making it.
I think every fan is pretty frustrated that we haven't signed the 1-2 players we require. But at the end of the day every player has got his value. When you look at the whole interview it isn't as bad as what the sections reported make it out to be. Even if we'd bid £30m for Willian we probably would not have signed him. What's the point in having a Committee if they don't set a value on a player at the maximum you need to sign him for?
Willian could have made the move happen. To me, he just comes across as driven by money and we have had too many of them over the past. I just don't share Rodgers' frustration at missing out on him
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

Spot on. We have a reputation to repair and that includes how the club's finances are runOriginally posted by Alex View PostI personally think this is prudent business sense from FSG. Allowing Rodgers to spend money at will is a recipe for disaster, same with almost all football manager.

Fair enough if the owners wouldn't match Spurs bid for Willain, that's their choice to make.
Except, two clubs think it is worth paying the price, and one of them is a Champions league winner and title challenger, so it does beg the question, if he's good enough to play for a club like that and for that price, why did we not indentify this and nip and get a player that clubs ahead of us would gladly sign?
If the only, and i mean the only reason is price, then maybe we misjudged how good this player could be.
Or, Spurs/AVB and Maureen/Chavski have, maybe BR too, as he seemed keen.
Only time will tell us who's judgement is correct.

I can see why Rodgers is frustrated at not being able to make a deal happen for what he seems to think is the final piece needed to create a genuinely competitive team/squad. I'm not sure that it is Willian so much as the fact that we haven't got a quality player for a role he thinks needs filling.Originally posted by Sarb View Post

I think we are going about things the right way but it is frustrating that we haven't managed to go into the season with our squad rebuilding completed as the manager wanted."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I think the thing is that teams in a different situation to us may be willing to pay more as the risk/reward ratio is different for them. Also the idea that we could 'nip in' and that agents wouldn't alert other teams to get more money out of the deal seems to me to be a pretty unlikely scenario (I accept it is possible). In this case it appears we were first on the scene but all the interested parties just wanted more money or something else that others could offer.Originally posted by Vermilion View PostFair enough if the owners wouldn't match Spurs bid for Willain, that's their choice to make.

Surely, everyone thinks we have to have some sort of limits on what we will play for each player?Last edited by dww; 23-08-13, 09:30 AM."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Yeah, that's really why i said if the only reason we didn't sign him was price and price only, i accept other circumstamces normally come into play in the real football world.Originally posted by dww View PostI think the thing is that teams in a different situation to us may be willing to pay more as the risk/reward ratio is different for them. Yes of course there has to be limits, just so long as we are prepared to go beyond them now and then if the manager really feels a player is needed, available and wants to come here before a better placed club come in for him, should that situation arise, which it did with Suarez.

And what about those instances where we don't "miss out"? There have been a few of those too - Coutinho, Sturridge, Mignolet, Aspas etc etc.Originally posted by EwarWoo View PostYou get the feeling this will always be 5-10m more than the owners are willing to pay, in every instance where we miss out on a player.
For the extra cash that would have been required to acquire Willian, you could probably buy Tom Ince.Oh I don't know.

I like to think of that as Arnic inflation.Originally posted by EwarWoo View PostYou get the feeling this will always be 5-10m more than the owners are willing to pay, in every instance where we miss out on a player."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
