This is the sticking point I believe, his new wage structure would dictate a much higher release clause than the one he wants.

He wants both big wages (I'm a star so deserve it) and low release clause so other clubs can get him cheap in a few years or he has a good WC.

Or he wants a fair wage considering what dross like Lovren and Mig are on and expects a release clause as pretty much all contracts on the continent have one. I’d give him a bit extra in the shape of wedge to buy out the expectation of a release clause and I expect this is what’s being negotiated at the moment. The other issue was around where Klopp wants to use him but as he has only played in defence once or twice this past year I’d assume that’s no longer an issue.

Just stick a £30m clause in and give the guy £100k a week. Done, surely?

There's nothing stopping us having elevated values in the contracts of all our players. If rather we sold them at the price we're happy with than forever having the fear that they'll go for nothing, especially with the cruise control that often happens in the last months of a contract running down

I'd agree to a point with that, but it's also about having some level of control of when a player leaves, which is hard with a release clause.

But that said, having a player of Can's ability leave on a free really sucks, and especially now that the transfer market have exploded thanks to PSG. Replacing him will likely be very expensive. Can is a replaceable player, nothing outstanding or essential to our game style, but it's money that could be spent better and giving him a good contract seems a cheap option atm.

I think we need to be in a position where we can slot players in and out so that this sort of situation can be dealt with without the usual panic. If the release clause was common place and a contingency in place then it will make financial planning easier you'd have thought

If he has a good WC, his value will be closer to 60m than 30m. We then lose him for maybe half his real market value.

No clause means you pay the market price if you want him and if we want to sell.

We would not have Keite for 48+ without the clause, he is worth double that in today's market.

With a clause Coutinho would be long gone for tuppence.

I agree with the club on no clauses, it also isn't a sign of a player wanting to commit if he has to have an escape route.

Haven't MessI and Ronaldo had a clause since forever?

I think all players in Spain have to have one?

It's a bit **** that we've lost a player with potential on a free but whilst I do like Can, it's interesting that only juventus where in for him and personally I reckon with the pace of the Italian league he'll go and boss it there

But for a good few years I've felt our midfield has been all over the shop and has played a big part in why are defence looks all over the shop at times. The way we want to play for me the balance of the midfield three was all over the place and Can was part of that. I'm hoping that now he's gone and more than likely coutinho will go too it may well force our hand and we go out and sort it out....we already have Keita coming to give us that box to box energy, if we can go and find a class dm to play in the centre of our three then I feel we can move on from can reasonably easily. I'd say it'll be easier for us to replace can and improve in that area then it will be with coutinho

He'll kick on with Juventus IMO, but he's been treading water with us. Even if we signed him up to a long-term contract, I wouldn't be convinced that he'd push on with us. He's one those players who needs a fresh start, and a new environment.

Es a strange one. He has great potential, good attributes and at times has looked like a rolls Royce of a player in that midfield. But when he's off he can look horrendous

I've always felt that's he's just lacked a little bit of sharpness over five yards that has prevented him from being totally dominant in midfield

I agree, I would have liked him to stay, but he does have his bad games and he and Henderson are not quick enough in midfield for me. Even though Lucas wasn't great in midfield, he could turn and pass the ball so quick, while Gerrard and Henderson took two more touches to turn. I would love someone with bit better touch like that.
