The benchmark for a strong striker is not Nunez.

Was not saying it was either.

I was picking up on the comment about not having confidence in a player to lead a line (and at Liverpool the wide men are often who do that in terms of goal/assist return) and saying that, for me of course, the four names I put up all fall under that lack of confidence thing for one reason or another and as such, again for me, should be part of any conversations with regards being replaced or upgraded upon.

This seems like a muddled point, contrived to muddy the waters around Nunez's failings. Jota, sure, he's a crock. Gakpo is one the hottest properties in Europe now after the euros and Diaz could go to almost any club he wanted. The idea that they need upgrading is fanciful.

We aren't paying with a false 9 like we did with bobby under klopp, our CF should be getting on to crosses, turning the centre back and scoring goals, and as such, our current options are lacking. Our wide attacking options are up there with the best in the division, probably Europe.

The two guys who have played there the most Jota and Nunez have xG's of 3.8 and 2.6 respectively in the league. It's not that they are missing chances (i.e. a high xG and low number of goals). If you look at PL stats on xG Salah is up there at the top, but our next players to show up are Diaz and Jota who are 35th and 36th in the league Gakpo is 66th and Nunez is 71st. From the stats it looks like we aren't creating that many chances for them (or they are passing rather than shooting)
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It's not even that for me.

For me it is a case that I don't have massive confidence in any of the four I named being more likely to score (or assist) than to not do so, and for me I would not be upset with selling any of them if it meant a new attacker coming in.

It is not a case of slag the other three to protect Nunez or anything childish like that. It is just a matter of how I would be happy to sell any of the four, whichever brought in the most money, if it meant that new attacker being got.

Salah is the only guy in our attack that I feel like he can score on a good day or on a bad day. The rest are all hit and miss.

For me it's a question of how we want to play, personally I am not sure either Nunez or Jota suit the style Slot wants. The wide players I think the same could apply but are less of an issue IMO. Long term there needs to be some evolution, even if Salah stays for 2 or even 3 more years after this there needs to be some sort of succession planning. I am not convinced that as things stand an attack without Salah made up of any combination of the others would be good enough to compete for trophies, the rest are mostly good players who can support a main man but I don't think any would be able to step up and do what Salah does, but I don't think we will find another Salah, we probably need to evolve our forward line to have a central striker who gets most of the goals, but who is well supported by the 2 wide players

Thats really the crux of it. If they don't fit his system then its best to move on.

Keyword is 'If' too - because whilst they aren't scoring loads of goals we are winning the majority of our games . So clearly something is working.

                  Salah is Salah.

Who would you upgrade Diaz for and expect them to turn into Salah/Mane?

Most likely a pipe dream but I really rate Rafael Leao - think he would be immense in the PL

If Diaz went to Spain that would be where i'd be looking to reinvest.

No what I said is I would like to bring in a new attacker and sell whicever one of the four etched the highest fee.

So if, for arguements sake, we got Jonathan David, he would slot into the number 9/false9 or 10 slot depending on how he was used and if Diaz was the one sold then Nunez/Gakpo/Jota would be vying for the LW slot and also for being the back ups to David.

If Jota or Nunez were sold in the same scenario then Diaz stays at LW and the others compete with him whilst being cover for David.

As for replacing Diaz outright with someone who might be a genuine top tier winger that might be a Mane level guy, well the name that would spring to mind for me would be Kvaratskhelia. Would not be cheap and probably cost in the 90m to 100m range but if we got a massive offer for Diaz of say 60m to 70m then going for someone like Kvaratskhelia would be a serious upgrade. Imo of course.

Picking Kvaratskhelia as I think he is the only one of the guys that look top tier that might be available to buy as guys like Vini jnr are no goes imo.

Is he? No idea - lucky for everyone I'm not in charge of LFC recruitment

One of those that looks to have almost everything needed to be top class.

Strong, tall, very fast, great dribbler, good finisher and seems to usually get almost as many assists a season as he does goals.

No idea if he would bring the sort of workrate that Slot seems to like, but skillwise and physically he seems perfect for a league like the PL, plus he is apparantly fluent in english.

He actually reminds me at times of a bigger and faster version of Diaz albeit with the same habit of having a run of games where there is no end product (though the gaps between goals or assists seem to happen less often for Leao )

Think he has a number of years left on his current contract though so would imagine he would come with an eye watering price tag.

Great summary! I've not watched tons of him, but he always seems to be causing havoc down the left, with multiple ways to beat a man and (I think) being quite two footed

But have never seen him tracking back so no idea on that front
