The way I see it, at the moment, the best comparison would be someone like Berbatov. The Mancs paid £30m for his services but he's not a regular starter. However, he is used very well as a squad player who adds certain attributes to the team when he is called upon.

Worst case scenario at the moment: Carroll is a great player to bring on with 20 mins to go to shake things up a bit.

the problem there is Berbatov is 10 years older than carroll and has a good scoring record for them. there is no comparison at all

I saw the potential in Lucas & defended him since day 1, & like I say I'm doing my best to reserve judgement on Carroll, but you have to assess the use of money as well as the player in question to have a full understanding of the bigger picture.

As present, that is a vast amount of £s we couldve spent better. We arent rich enough & dont have enough squad depth to have a player of that cost on the bench.

The argument that he may or may not come good is certainly a valid one, but the problem is that we need someone to contribute right now.

Im surprised some people havent learnt there lesson.
2 years ago, Craig, myself and a small handful of people were the only ones on here supporting Lucas. The rest said he was ****, not LFC material (whatever that supposed to be btw) he wasnt good enough to clean the **** off Mashers boots etc etc etc. Fast forward two years and the same gob****es who slated him on here and in the stands wouldnt dream of starting a game WITHOUT him. In fact Ive seen a few panicking in case he gets an injury. Now its not the fact that we havnet got cover, its the fact that he is genuinly a top top player.
I have every confidence that the big fella will do the business in time just like I and a couple of people did with Lucas. Like Craig has said so many times, the lad is 22 years old. Played just over a dozen games for us and has come back from a bad injury. The more pressure people stick on his young shoulders, the longer it will take to bed him in.
If we just let him get on with what we know he can do and ****ing forget about how much he cost then he will eventually become a great player for us.

I think if you look at my arguments with Craig, it was me supporting him, not Craig.

However I seriously worry about Carroll's game intelligence and movement which is imo below the standard he needs to be a success.

First point:

Luis Suarez was a player LFC wanted to sign to play with Torres. The coming or going of Torres had no effect on our decision to buy Suarez.

Leads onto the second point:

Andy Carroll was brought in to replace Fernando Torres, who was a key player for LFC and was a massive loss.

Third point:

Lucas was brought in as a squad player to cover for Masch/Xabi. If he took time that was okay as he wasn't key to the teams chances.

Sadly, at £35m Carroll was and is expected to be a key performer for LFC. Had he been performing as was expected, Liverpool would look a totally different proposition than they are now. If he doesn't start playing to his potential I think whilst LFC will still get 4th, it'll be a season long scrap for that place. If he does start playing as we know he can, then we'll be on the coat tails of the top 2/3 before long.

Good points mate. Summarises what I've been trying to say. None of these are direct criticisms of the player per se, but they evaluate the problems with the purchase thus far.

When we purchased him i really wanted him to work out, but so far he hasn't been what he's been made out to be.

Crazy comparison. Rooney was almost a nailed on star of the future in most peoples eyes.

At Newcastle he was dynamite. He will come good. He's just adapting.

It is utterly absurd to write Carroll off based on his LFC career to date. FFS he joined when he was injured, showed a glimpse or two of what he is capable of at the end of last season and has played a couple of games this. Hardly a fair crack of the whip.

Some people seem to be very mixed up on this issue, worrying about a players form is hardly writing him off.
