Downing and Carroll are quite similar for me. I Wouldnt have signed either player given the choice, but I do think they can perform a lot better for us than what they are showing.

I honestly believe that both players are one good game away from turning their season around. Both are capable of doing what they were signed for, they just need to play with more freedom and a clear head.

For me, both seem to have become withdrawn and it's just a lack of confidence that's making them perform badly.

Personally, I'd stick them both in the starting XI against Bolton and see what happens. If either player clicks then it's just in time for two massive cup games and could be the catalyst needed to get our season back on track.

              Very clever.

If this doesn't get Downing going, then I don't know what will. Interesting that he added Carragher's opinion on him in there.

Downing needs to do what he did at Villa best, drive at defences and get them scrambling towards their own goal. He did it repeatedly last season and he seems to have forgotten it now.

He doesn't get past people, but he ensures that the team is much higher up the pitch so that he can make a good pass. The space between full-back and centre-half is where he's made key runs in the past for Villa and Middlesbrough. He's not doing it anymore.

I'd be tempted to try him in the centre for a game or two. Give him the ball and make him control the game like he did under Southgate. Get him to realise that he can do a job for us and that there's nothing to be afraid of.

                Carroll perhaps,
Downing is performing at or near expectation.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

His ****ness comes from a complete lack of self belief and confidence. Shifting him around the pitch will solve **** all.

Shifting him off the pitch is the answer.

Obviously. Don't hold your breath waiting though.

Or maybe KK thought that downing was going to be really really really ****, like you know, start drinking on the pitch or something.

Anyway, I do appreciate the KK efforts in backing up his players but that statement was right out of Roy Hodgson's handbook. If the Bodge had said something remotely close, there would have been riots on est and other forums.

Disagree. Hodgson would've slagged him off and said he was ****ing wank. Maybe blamed him for being 7th in the league. Clearly Kenny is trying to give the hapless Downing a lift. Good management IMO, even if buying him was disastrous.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

As manager no matter what you really think, you should paint your players in a positive light to the press, insulting them is just idiotic (or in Roy's case, self serving).
