If Rafa had cash we'd have had Dani Alves on the right and Silva in the left about now. Probs Simao on the bench.

Who was that against again?Originally posted by kubrickscube View PostHe's gone rubbish. His confidence is shot.
BUT
Can you remember the first pre season games he played? He was ace.

To be fair, I thought Downing has been good in at least two or three games and average in the rest, bar the last couple of performances when he has been atrocious.
If his effort against Sunderland had gone in and we'd been more clinical and put the opportunities he'd created away earlier in the season, I wonder if he'd have grown in confidence and he'd be given a little more slack.
But as it is, he didn't, so there is no point looking back at 'what ifs'. Do you reckon he holds any value to be sold on in the summer?

Don't forget the mighty Sean DundeeOriginally posted by Roger View Postvoronin was ace in pre-season, as was cheyrou. look how they turned out.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

He is probably worth about half what we paid for him atm.Originally posted by Muddled View PostTo be fair, I thought Downing has been good in at least two or three games and average in the rest, bar the last couple of performances when he has been atrocious.

He is still only 27 and I am sure there would be more than few clubs (e.g. Sunderland, Villa, Stoke etc.) that may be interested as long as we are willing to sell him at loss.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

I think £10m would be better than watching him have another average season and watch his value slide further down.Originally posted by Mostar View PostHe is probably worth about half what we paid for him atm.

valid points, but the really good players are tough mentally and don't let a bit of bad luck destroy them.Originally posted by Muddled View PostTo be fair, I thought Downing has been good in at least two or three games and average in the rest, bar the last couple of performances when he has been atrocious.

i'd like to think a few managers in the premier league would be interested in him. i guess we'll see in the summer, but unless he suddenly finds form we should definetely get rid.
no point keeping a player who appears weak mentally and isn't benefitting the team. not like he's a youngster either, he'll be 28 in the summer.

over simplistic.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostIf Rafa had cash we'd have had Dani Alves on the right and Silva in the left about now. Probs Simao on the bench.
While we could have bought them if Rafa had cash we could have ended up with Malouda/Quaresma or countless others that have turned out ****e, we were linked with hundreds of players!!!
and he may have allready spent money before they were avaliable._____________________________________

Yeah, I've commented before that he is 'too nice' for the Premier League; he never seems to get angry at a tackle or yell at the officials (I'm not talking all the time, but a rought tackle or a dodgy decision against you, should create some passion slash venom) and the only time he did it was against Man Utd on Saturday, when he got booked and reminded us he was on the pitch.Originally posted by Roger View Postvalid points, but the really good players are tough mentally and don't let a bit of bad luck destroy them.

I think any offer of a reasonable value and we should consider it.

would be gutted if we didnt get rid. but then someone will be left with some explaining to do. 20m superflop, i reckon he will end up back home with Newcastle/Sunderland for 10m tops.Originally posted by Roger View Postvalid points, but the really good players are tough mentally and don't let a bit of bad luck destroy them.

I think it depends on the wages we have offered him. If its 50-55K Sunderland, Villa, Stoke maybe willing to take him on at 10 million.Originally posted by Mostar View PostHe is probably worth about half what we paid for him atm.

If the wages are in the 75K- 100K bracket we will be loosing a lot of money as we will have to cover part of the wages also.

Clearly not confirmed but speculations were that he is on 70k per week.Originally posted by peekay View PostI think it depends on the wages we have offered him. If its 50-55K Sunderland, Villa, Stoke maybe willing to take him on at 10 million.

Even if Sunderland, Villa and/or Stoke are only willing to pay 50-55k and he is unwilling to accept that then we are still better to go with "Damage Control" type of approach and pay the difference if we don't think that he could turn things around.
No point keeping him on the bench and paying him all this money if he is not capable of ever being a player Kenny and Comolli thought he would have become.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club
