Rafael Benitez is believed to be keen on a move for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva should the Spanish boss take charge of Napoli this summer.

The current Chelsea interim manager, who is overseeing his final games in charge of the Blues as they tour America, has been heavily linked with a move back to Serie A to succeed Walter Mazzarri.

And Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport believe the former Liverpool boss wants to make Lucas his first signing, despite the Brazilian international only singing a new long-term contract at Anfield last month.

The 26-year-old said at the time: ‘I am really delighted to have the opportunity to play for this club. It’s where I think I belong and where I wanted to stay, so I am very happy and looking forward to a few more years here.’

But it looks as though Benitez, who originally signed Lucas for the Reds in 2007, is keen to work with the midfielder again and may have the funds to make Liverpool an offer the can’t refuse, should Napoli strike a big-money deal to sell striker Edinson Cavani.

Easy story to write that. I think Rafa will be well aware we won't entertain any bids for him. Load of nonsense on many levels.

      every player has his price

how much would it take to get a Lucas. enough to replace him with a strootman, or more...

Rodgers said just recently again about Luis that every player has its price so it is very possible that we could sell Lucas if we get what we'd consider to be a good value.

        I wouldn't rule that out.

Offer would need to be in the region of £20m though, and I'm not sure we'd find a decent replacement even with that sort of money

If we are offered in region of £15-16m I'm not so sure we would say no.

Strootman personally would be a very good consideration but he'd cost little bit more than that.

If Rafa could pick one defensive midfielder out there to sign then it would probably be Lucas.

Rodgers loves Lucas, no way would he consider selling for that price. I'm not sure he would entertain any offer, unless he had concerns about his long term fitness.

Same thing was bandied about when Rafa took charge at Inter........never happened.

Would expect Rodgers to recognise how important Lucas is to our squad, but would never underestimate a player's urge to move on after a long time at one club.

Rodgers loves Agger and we came so close to selling him anyways. I'm not so sure it is him who makes that call.

In terms of price, Lucas before injury was 20m player but after injury he is not.

for someone who has never played the game, That seems a ridiculously low average for the top tackler in the prem. Not even 5 tackles in 90min

Been very good in pre-season and getting better with every game. The amount of interceptions he makes is staggering and his passing sublime. Could be massive for us next year if he can stay fit, arguably as important as Suarez. Definitely think top 4 is achievable with him in the side. Hopefully he'll make the Brazil squad for the world cup too.
