Harsh reality but Barrett has hit the nail on the head. Big changes are needed and I think we'll see just that in the coming weeks/months imo.Originally posted by Shaggy View Post

I'm not sure there is, it's probably viewed as more of an achievement viewed from the outside and is something rival fans try to use to devalue it. In 20 years time when people are looking at Lampard or Terry's medal collection I doubt very few people will say they only won it because Abramovic bought it for them. At the end of the day a medal collection is a medal collection.Originally posted by tanner View PostI agree to an extent.
Sure, there's more satisfaction to win a trophy with a club without the riches of say Chelsea, City or Utd, however, I think we're giving too much credit to players of today if we think they'll value or even recognise that. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Do we regard McManaman's CL or Owen's La Liga medals to be worth anything? Sure the stats on paper will look good in 50 years time when some of us are dead but until then we remember.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI'm not sure there is, it's probably viewed as more of an achievement viewed from the outside and is something rival fans try to use to devalue it. Barrett is spot on. Sterling's situation is but one of a number of issues surrounding the club. The fanbase, at least on the internet, seems really downhearted and not very optimistic. The match going fans can comment on the mood there. Where is the glimmer of hope? People can point to Coutinho, but then, will we be in the same situation next year regarding if he stays or goes?

Forgetting what other people think, what is there to be proud of in joining a team who are pretty much guaranteed to win trophies, with or without you, and then playing a bit part in them winning trophies? All you've proven to yourself is that you weren't **** enough to stop them winning trophies.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI'm not sure there is, it's probably viewed as more of an achievement viewed from the outside and is something rival fans try to use to devalue it. Wasn't McManaman was a regular at Real Mardrid? I seem to remember he scored in one of the CL finals. While Owen wasn't a regular he scored 13 La Liga goals, so while we might like to play down their achievements, I think it's somewhat difficult to justifiably claim they didn't contribute.Originally posted by BigChief View PostDo we regard McManaman's CL or Owen's La Liga medals to be worth anything? Smicer was a bit part player for us in 2005 does that mean that he doesn't deserve his medal, or does his goal in the CL final alone make his contribution significant? What about Mellor and Pongolle, without their contribution against Olympiakos we wouldn't have got to Istanbul, where do you draw the line? With a cup those are key moments and I would assume no-one would say they didn't play a part, in a league campaign things are more complicated.
As much as we claim otherwise it no-one is guarenteed to win trophies, true the side may or may not have won the trophies whether a particular player was there or not, but it's difficult to assess which player made a difference. I guess that is why there are guidelines as to who gets a medal, not everyone who gets a medal has made an equal contribution but I guess everyone with a medal has made some contribution.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostForgetting what other people think, what is there to be proud of in joining a team who are pretty much guaranteed to win trophies, with or without you, and then playing a bit part in them winning trophies?
