We really can't afford to keep selling key performers year upon year. Alonso, Mascherano, Arbeloa, Torres and (to a certain extent) Meireles have all left in the last few years for differing reasons - but the point is they have left.

We don't want to be seen as a selling club by players, agents and rival clubs, but that is what I think will happen if we continually sell our best players. It is important that we are not seen as a 'stepping-stone' but a club where players feel that they have arrived, if you know what I mean. And actually what kind of message does it send to our current players when they see one of our best players being sold to a rival club? What does that say about our ambitions? Especially at a time that we need to rebuild.

As for the idea that selling Skrtel would be acceptable because we'd get a high fee and Agger makes him look better than he is, well, you could make that kind of argument for selling any of our key performers: Lucas - just back from a long term injury, will he be the same?; Reina - been below his absolute best for the last season or so; Agger - this is the only season that he's been pretty much injury free, maybe sell while his stock is high as his injuries might reoccur next season; Suarez - all the bad publicity etc. Skrtel is a quality player and that is why City might want him. We can't sell one our best players to strengthen a rival and hope that we can convince a player as good to come to an 8th place team with no CL football.

i doubt skrtel will go. too much speculation based on random journo's and ****ter. dont think Duncan Jenkins gives it and coverage, so its probably bollox.

if he did then agger/coates must be our starting pair.

kelley is a good defender. he might slide from rb to cb with a little more game time. he will be preferred over wisdom until the younger lad has a little more gam,e time, but he seems to be a cert for the future.
