Manchester City are targeting a shock summer move for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel should the Merseysiders fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Manuel Pellegrini will be in the market for a new central-defender with Joleon Lescott almost certain to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer. And Skrtel is emerging as a prime target for City in their search for Vincent Kompany’s next partner.
Skrtel has impressed for the Anfield club this season as Brendan Rodgers’ side look to secure a top-four place, and his performances have alerted City.
The Slovakian signed a contract extension in August 2012 and is said to be happy on Merseyside.
But he wants to play Champions League football and with Liverpool still on course to qualify, Skrtel remains hopeful of achieving his goal at Anfield.
However, City are ready to pounce should Rodgers’ side once again fail to make the top four.
Meanwhile, Lescott will be offered a lucrative free transfer to Turkish club Besiktas when his contract expires at the end of the season.
He our best outright defender alright. Sakho looks promising but I don't think it's unfair to say the jury is still out until he puts in more time for us.
