He hasn't progressed this season but in this day and age I don't think £70k per week is unreasonable for a German international.

I'd be inclined to give him that size of contract on a 5-year deal as even if he doesn't push on I think it protects his transfer value and we can sell him on for £15/20m in 2018/2019.

I'm not a Can fan but even I think £35k a week is ridiculously low for such a player. Could be the new contract ups that to approx. 50k but with incentives to go higher depending on performances? Anyway, barring Hendo and Weeji, I'd be happy to completely overhaul our midfield including new squaddies in the summer.

As Arsenal fans have realised: better the devil you don't know then the devil you already do.

He's not done anything of note to demand £70k a week...never shown any real consistent form,The odd few good games and is injured a lot......

          Aren't you forgetting Lallana?

I consider him part of the attack solution despite his involvement in midfield. Similar to how I view Weeji as a midfielder despite his frequent contributions in attack.

Glad you're not the manager as that makes little sense.

Both Lallana and Wijnaldum play midfield regardless of how often they attack (or defend).

That's a key bone in the 'spine' the first team urgently needs. With Hendo taking one spot and the need for a new world class first teamer (Dahoud-type) taking the other, I can't see Can being anything other than a sub in PL games. Not sure Can will settle for that, even though we do need more bodies for next season's fixtures.

I read last night that he is another who has been carrying injuries, something to do with his calf and not being able to feel his feet during games - not surprising to hear given his form because as many have said, some times he looks like he's running in snow....

We don't half seem to suffer with injury prone players - over the last year or two all of the following have had regular periods in and out due to injuries/knocks/illness

                    Lovren
                    Sakho
                    Matip
                    Henderson
                    Lallana
                    Can
                    Sturridge
                    Ings
                    Grujic

Some of those (Sturridge, Henderson, Sakho and maybe Matip) seem to always have had issues but the frequency of injuries does make you wonder if there is/was something in the criticism of Klopp's training from Raymond Verheijen.

Getting rid of Emre would be stupid.

He's got more potential than Henderson and has a more complete game.

He also has a rare trait for a deep lying midfielder, the ability to burst forward (he's not slow when he gets going, just in terms of acceleration) and score the odd goal.

It's not been a great season for him but he's still bagged 4 goals and is still so young.

Can playing deeper seems the best option for a more defensive minded midfielder and also means we can make better use of hendersons endless running and pressing further forward when he is fit to play.
