downers was also voted villa player of the year here; http://www.birminghammail.net/birmin...7319-28754752/

WATCHING Stewart Downing deservedly pick up his three player-of-the-season awards at Villa’s annual dinner function earlier this month, my mind idly wandered to a sun-kissed summer in Portugal.

It was not an ‘already on the beach’ sensation as the campaign neared its conclusion and I prepared for my holidays, it was more me reflecting on fans’ feelings towards Downing on Villa’s pre-season tour last August.

Travelling with supporters to matches at the Guadiana Cup competition in the Algarve, the general consensus was that Downing was a waste of money.

Those views were based on a difficult half-a-season spell for the £12 million winger who was striving for form and fitness after signing for Villa on crutches.

I was surprised at the level of criticism aimed at Downing on that coach, particularly because those supporters are among the club’s most loyal, well-informed, understanding followers.

So it is against that backdrop that Downing has gone from zero to hero. From being branded a predictable one-footed softie, to becoming Villa’s most influential player by a mile, the transformation is complete.

He can score goals, he can make goals, he can speed games up or slow them down, on his left foot or his right. But, most impressively, he can make his critics admit they were so, so wrong.

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

      Wow, uncanny.

Doing that at Villa is one thing, I doubt he can do it here. Fingers crossed though!
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I dont think he can either and at his age, he's hardly developing still. However, i'm very reluctant to completely write someone off after just a year/one season.

i know what you mean mate, but we cannot assume that the "Lucas Paradox" will apply to all piss poor performing players.

I'm not assuming it will come good, but whilst we can say it 'shouldnt' need time, Downing could quite well be in the position where he needs a year to come to terms with moving to a big club and adjust to what's required.

Not saying he'd come out next season and be great, but better players than him in easier situations have needed a year before they got going.

IMO, and I know it doesn't hold sway on here, but I think Downing is a very good player. So it stands to reason that Downing is capable of pushing on.
              Forwards.......

Hope he gets sold in the summer and we pick up a decent fee for him, so we can invest in a wide player that actually makes our first team better instead of worse.

Same with Carroll - we cannot wait 3 or 4 years for him to come good either!
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

You really dont have any time for young players.
                    *Except Michael, who died.

Far too many people just have absolutely zero patience whatsoever. If they're not amazing straight away, sell them.

wasnt some of the justification for getting the likes of Downing that they will settle straight in know what the prem is like. Rather than foreigners who take a year or so to settle

                        etc etc etc

I seem to remember the point being raised that the players bought were not good enough for European footy so what we had essentially done was purchase some players who would need to be replaced/improved upon pretty sharpish.

i think there is an element of no patience also an element of "i thought they where **** and they are proving to be ****" type attitude.

however the flip side is that we had a manager who wasnt good enough and he had to go. Are we saying that we were not patient enough with the bodge?

Hodgson had no previous credentials to suggest he was any good.

could it not be said that downing is performing about where he always has?

Downing has performed well for england, equivalently speaking, Hodgson never came close.

I know you like to be a bit devil's advocate and go against the grain, but there's nothing here for you to nibble at.
