Not sure I have a well defined opinion about the rights and wrongs of it but it seems to me that if we intend to use the academy as a platform for future success then we will need to recruit the best players we can as that is what others do. He's not said never sign a foreigner or even never sign a foreign kid, he's just said he'd prefer them staying where they are till 18 or whatever. I dont agree with him and think locals will come through if they are good enough regardless but a proud scouser wanting the academy to be scouse is hardly radical or "disastrous".Comment

If there are good enough scousers they will come through. We've been here before but you know my point on this. It's cheaper for clubs to get players in with potential early on, then develop them. There's more risk as well as you won't know if a player will develop into a top player but that's how things are done now.Are we winning?Comment

Taking 16/17 years olds or younger from another country or even continent not only isn't necessary, it's not right either imo.

I think it'll have very little effect what he says. As usual it's getting overanalysed and the reaction is overblown.
Obviously it wouldn't be sensible for one club to adopt it as a policy but that isn't what he's suggesting.
By the way I disagree with him about over 18's. But yeah, I think it would be a good thing if football stopped exploiting children..

For most of the youngsters it is a fantastic opportunity to move abroad or to another City, learn another language/experience another culture, get first class education both academically and footballing, all resulting in the chance to become a professional. That's a specious argument.
It fails to look at the fact that the vast majority of kids don't end up in the position of Messi and the others.
It also fails to address the moral question of what it means for our world that some ff the most famous companies in the world are prepared to put kids through a mill..
