Man City transfers: Blues unwilling to meet Liverpool's Sterling valuation
Manchester City are unlikely to meet Liverpool's £50m valuation for Raheem Sterling.
Although the Sterling saga took another twist on Wednesday, as the 20-year-old forward phoned in sick and failed to attend Liverpool training, M.E.N. Sport understands a third bid is not imminent.
City's stance comes just a day after they cooled their interest in midfielder Paul Pogba over Juventus' £71m asking price.
The developments could severely impact City's transfer strategy, although they remain hopeful of signing Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin de Bruyne.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak promised last month the club would make 'high-quality signings', however City's only arrival this summer has been Turkish teenager Enes Unal.
Blues players returned for pre-season training on Tuesday and the club has already had two offers rejected for England international Sterling, who is believed to have told Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers he does not want to go on the club's pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.
City saw a £25m bid rising to £30m package and then a £35m offer rising to £40m snubbed by Liverpool.
Sterling’s Liverpool contract expires in 2017 and he rejected a £100,000-a-week offer earlier this year while his agent, Aidy Ward, allegedly said in May Sterling would not sign a £900,000-a-week deal to stay at the Anfield Club.
Liverpool have denied claims Sterling 'doesn't want to play' for manager Brendan Rodgers and have reinforced their attack in the event Sterling does leave.
Strikers Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino have signed for The Reds and Belgian forward Divock Origi will link up with the squad after spending a year on-loan at Lille.

Good on Berahino. If only Sterling had a brain he would do the same thing. I wonder if we will reignite our interest in Berahino.Saido Berahino splits with Raheem Sterling's controversial agent Aidy Ward after West Brom star becomes disillusioned
- West Brom striker Saido Berahino has left his agent Aidy Ward
- Ward is behind Raheem Sterling's ongoing dispute with Liverpool
- Berahino thought to be disillusioned with his agent following Sterling saga

West Brom striker Saido Berahino has parted company with Aidy Ward, the controversial football agent behind Raheem Sterling’s transfer fiasco with Liverpool.
The 21-year-old joined Sterling in going with Ward when the agent set up on his own last season after leaving Impact Sports Management.
But Berahino, who was called up to the England squad last November, is said to have become disillusioned with Ward following Sterling’s attempts to leave Anfield.
The 20-year-old phoned in sick on Wednesday and has said he won’t go on Liverpool’s pre-season tour.
Berahino’s management contract — still with Impact — expires in November.
Ward said: ‘I’m no longer working with Saido. You’ll have to ask him for the reasons. With Raheem, there has been a breakdown in trust between him and Brendan Rodgers.’
The controversial agent caused controversy towards the end of last season when he discussed Sterling's contract dispute with Liverpool in the media.
'I don't care about the PR of the club and the club situation. I don't care,' said Ward in May.
'He is definitely not signing. He's not signing for £700, £800, £900,000 a week. He is not signing.
'My job is to make sure I do the best with them (my clients). If people say I am bad at my job, or they are badly advised it does not matter.'
Sterling is now expected to leave Anfield this summer, with Manchester City his most likely destination.

I think it's nailed on he now becomes our top alternative to Benteke. Exactly the type of striker our committee will come up with, Ward was the only reason we haven't been linked with him IMOOriginally posted by marcus50bucks View PostGood on Berahino. I hope we stick to our guns and don't reduce the fee.Raheem Sterling's Liverpool dispute is now TOXIC and that's good news for Manchester City
07:00, 9 July 2015
BY DAVID MADDOCK
Wednesday's no-show raises the prospect of a total breakdown in relations — a showdown that, for the first time, you feel the Reds will struggle to win
If Liverpool didn’t know it already, then Raheem Sterling’s absence from training on Wednesday indicated they now have a toxic dispute on their hands.
The Reds have always been adamant their England winger remains under a long contract, and therefore they retain control not only of the situation, but his destiny for the time being.
Yet that sense of control was always based on the equally strong sense of respect between manager Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers and the 20-year-old.
Sterling has always turned up for training, always played through illness and injury, and always simply loved being involved...just as Luis Suarez did, even when he was embroiled in the depths of his own desperate dispute with the club.
Now though, that has changed and Rodgers has a mess on his hands — a truly toxic one.
Sterling is unlikely to return to the training ground until the end of the week, and then only reluctantly.
Even more seriously, he will maintain his determination to sit out the pre-season tour of the Far East, refusing to travel to Thailand, Australia and Malaysia no matter how loud or serious the threats of sanctions become.
He will simply refuse to play for Rodgers.
The manager has always maintained Sterling is a shadow of himself without that almost child-like love of the game, and passion to play, so to make such a devastating statement of intent essentially offers the message that Liverpool have lost the player forever.
On Wednesday, the club refused to make any official comment on the situation, even though Sterling’s absence with “illness” was total confirmation of the news that he had told the manager he wouldn’t play.
Yet privately, they were determined to reiterate their stance that there would be no dialogue with Manchester City unless their valuation of £50m was met.
Equally, they have bluntly told Sterling he is contractually obliged to turn up at the airport on Sunday to get on that plane to Bangkok.
Which is all well and good... until he doesn’t turn up.
And right now, the indications are that he won’t, and will happily accept the fine of £70,000 such an obvious statement of intent will provoke.
Perhaps even more troubling for Liverpool is the fact that City have decided to let the Reds stew in their own juice.
They are unlikely to return to negotiations any time soon - almost certainly not this week – with a third bid for the 20-year-old.
And when they eventually do, they will not be bidding the £50m Liverpool want.
Sources close to the club confirmed that fact on Wednesday night - suggesting any offer would be closer to the £35m they proposed three weeks ago.
It leaves the prospect of a total breakdown of relations with Sterling, and a showdown which – for the first time – you fear the Anfield club could struggle to win.
Before Sterling failed to turn up to work, they still held most of the cards. They could do what they did with Suarez: Call his bluff, make him train with the kids and bank on his desire to play at all costs.
Rodgers has always been happy to reveal he knew Suarez would knuckle down and play to his maximum once he realised he wasn’t going to Arsenal.
Can he think the same about Sterling now?
Clearly not.
