    Who is Brendon?

And why is Agger and Markovic on the same page when they were never in the same team?

2014/15 but it still has Agger on it? This must have been from pre-season at the very latest then - Kelly is still on it as well

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has played down the prospect of him captaining the club when Steven Gerrard leaves for Major League Soccer this summer.

Henderson became vice captain at the beginning of the season and has been captain in Gerrard's absence through injury in recent weeks, though manager Brendan Rodgers has played down talk of the former Sunderland midfielder being guaranteed the role.

"Next season we'll see what happens because it might not be me succeeding Stevie, it might be someone else," Henderson tells the official Liverpool FC magazine.

"There are a lot of strong leaders in the dressing room. There are a lot of big characters in the team - down to earth, humble people. Stevie's the perfect captain really. He's a leader on and off the field. He's someone we all look up to. He always puts the team first. He's very unselfish."

I think it shows that if we continue to pay these level of wages, we won't be attracting top talent and will struggle to retain our existing better players. Its still crazy money but in football terms when you have Utd, City, Chelsea and possibly Arsenal all able to offer more, its a challenge to compete.

I think the club have a real conundrum

They would like to maintain a specific pay structure but I do fear they will end up losing some players

The noises in the press that appear to be coming from the Henderson camp dont sound good

Thats on top of Sterling and Flanagan who are also in dispute

If Henderson isn't offered the money he wants then clubs will be circling who will and with one year left on his contract it means we risk losing him for peanuts. The same will happen to Sterling (which given his mega bucks value would be a disaster) if we don't sort that out soon.

There is still time, but if the club don't tie Henderson down before the transfer window opens then we risk losing him. It would be classic Liverpool amateur hour. It's already ridiculous that we've got to this point without either selling him or getting him to sign a new deal. He's not a Liverpool fan and will be rightly looking to maximize his earnings as he enters the peak of his career.

Agreed the time to get him on the "cheap" was after his first good season under Rodgers

We might have got a better deal middle of last season but now we are either going to have to give him what he wants or sell this summer

I think we dont have many more options than that

It seems fanciful people saying dont worry he will stay

Unless we come close to matching his pay demands, he will be off

                      Same with Sterling

I said earlier that the next 2 contracts are the most important ones of Hendersons career and they are generally the contracts were players earn the highest amounts of money as he is nearing his prime.

Good point, but another way to look at it is that some of the players that we have that are being spoken about in terms of six figure weekly wages might not be offered that by the clubs you named so their "value" may not be anywhere near what their agents would like the club to believe.

Take Sterling and the rumoured £130k demands. Could you imagine Arsenal, Chelsea or City paying him that right now? I know they could afford to do so but I would have my doubts that they would be steaming in with that kind of figure.

Same goes for Henderson and any talk of a £100k or more weekly wage. I just could not imagine any of those teams throwing in a £25m to £30m for him along with a big fat six figure weekly wage.

The players are "worth" the highest they can get for themselves, but that highest is based on whether or not they could get that figure elsewhere. If nobody else is actually willing to pay the much higher wage then it would be foolish for Liverpool to pay it before they have to. Of course if some other club was definately going to pay it, then that would change things with regards to any players who were part of the long term plans.

They wont have to pay £25-30m to get Henderson in the summer, with 12 months left on his contract the fee we would get wouldnt be anywhere near that

Hes also young enough to bide his time and go on a free

I can understand the clubs stance with Johnson, I can even understand the stance with Flanagan (because he only started playing last season)

Henderson however has become integral and if we dont get that sorted it will be an enormous blow

Personally I reckon City, United and Arsenal would all give him a bigger wage than we have offered even if they had to pay a fee in the summer

                          Thats what we face imo

I agree with Lecter here, unsurprisingly maybe I can imagine all these clubs paying higher than what we are offering for Sterling and Henderson. It's very valuable to have english players in your team who are actually capable of being something more than just squad players.

Walcott for example is on 100.000 a week and is getting a payrise this summer, Wilshere on a 150.000 according to the Mirror, Luke Shaw on 100.000 a week, Wellbeck is reporteldy on 115.000 and Ramsey is also on more than 100.000.

United spunked £30m on Shaw and are paying him circa £100K per week

                              Makes you wonder doesnt it

I think Henderson would easily get his wage demands even if clubs had to pay a big fee (which they wont)
