I think he was a great guy as captain when the team were in good form......to keep pushing that and keeping it going etc. But when the chips are down, he's actually counter productive for the rest of the players. Don't see him being part of the solution going forward.

To be honest though, Virgil and Robertson arent far behind him in the "fallen off a cliff" stakes. And Fabinho is worse than them all in that category

That’s the typical end point of this circular debate

Would be fine if he was coming off the bench but not at a level where we are relying on him to start every single game. Which leads to the lack of midfield investment discussion.

Been saying for a while we should have transitioned him into the Milner role and got some fresh legs in there

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

You can’t have your captain sat on the bench most of the time. Milner couldn’t be club captain now for example. He should have been sold.

Luka ****ing Modric is about 40 and plays every single minute of every single bloody game for Madrid and Croatia. He runs all game, spraying balls around left and right, hitting pass after pass, winning the ball back over and over.

Hendo's age is an excuse for not being able to play 2 games in a week is absolutely laughable.

He's just an incredibly average footballer that relied on being able to run non stop all game to get him by.

Luka Modric is one of the best players to ever kick a football. Man is an absolute marvel. It's almost unfair comparing him to any other midfielder.

Agree with you on Henderson. He's absolutely finished at the top level

He’s older than Milner and was a joy to watch - Kroos is older than Henderson. Milner and Hendo have needed their physicality to differentiate them whereas Kroos and Modric are sublime footballers - their footballing ability remains whereas the physical prowess of ours goes…… and then we have average footballers who can’t run

Madrid have really managed their midfield rebuild so well - Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga……

Thats harsh, this is what Man U and Everton supporters throw at him.

At his best he was the engine in a team that went on a few of the most incredible runs that football in England has ever seen. He captained a team to 3 CL Finals. You dont get to do that if you are average. I went to Anfield a couple of times in this period and it was then that you got to see his quality.

Same as with this team overall, given what was going on at City, he is unlikely to ever get the credit he deserves.

Our performance first half was excellent. It was a very competitive game where we made chances. Second half was a horror show littered with individual errors. Would we have won the game not likely. But take out Allisons mistake just before half time, Gomez not hacking Vinicius just after - it would have been a different game. After that it was one way traffic and the bench had nothing to counter it.

Question is how much of the time should he have been sitting on the bench, IMO if we had managed his minutes properly and limited him to 1 game a week his level in that game would have been higher than it has been the way he has been used. Obviously the quality and form of whoever we had brought in would also have had an impact, but I think he could still have got a decent enough amount of football to have remained as club captain for now

Yep, really what we should have been doing, managing minutes and introducing quality. We are relying on an 18 year old and hoping for transfers.

One thing, last night was an exclamation point to the overall rebuild. It is an absolute necessity. And it will run beyond the midfield.

Yeah that's a good point. It's not simply a case of signing two midfielders and we're back in contention

The entire team needs an overhaul. I'm not sure anyone is safe.

On paper we have a strong set of attacking options.

Beyond that... Need another CB for sure we need a new Virgil, and not someone that is injured frequently. Massive issues at RB (though that could be fixed with a decent CDM and CB).
