Thought he and the side looked better when he moved forward, maybe we are limiting him too much by making him play so deep......

Sure I said this last week, spot on. The reason hamann was so important for Liverpool was because he gave great cover and allowed Gerrard to do what he does best, problems simple play a Defensive Midfield player and have Gerrard Attacking midfield.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostThought he and the side looked better when he moved forward, maybe we are limiting him too much by making him play so deep......Bob and I never had any rows. We didn't have any time for that. We had to plan where we were going to keep all the cups we won.

I dont agree, I remembe Rafa saying he wanted to move Gerrard further upfield later in his career. I think he can just as well play behind the striker as in front of the defence. I'd rather the former, think he's not up to being in front of the defence. FFS you still have Totti playing in the Roma attack at 38.Originally posted by rcasemore View PostPeople moan about Gerrard not "having the legs" to play in his deeper role and yet expect him to be able to cope as an AM! He might be able to play a little further forward and get more involved with our attacking play but playing him as an actual AM is over.* The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

However it is equally valid to play the AM role in the way Berbatov played as a striker.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostI dont agree, I remembe Rafa saying he wanted to move Gerrard further upfield later in his career. The problem with Gerrard as a DM is as much with the fact that with two fullbacks bombing on there is a huge amount of space to cover as it is his slowing down. However he has always had a keener eye for attacking positions than defensive ones."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

even if he isnt doing the pressing and the main thrust of the attacking he will still be able to take the ball and pass it on, keeping momentum and supporting the attack. the main movement can come from lallana and hendo either side, and he can help feed sterling and sturridge in front.
if it means we get more return supporting the attack and less interference with the defensive team then it might be win/win for us.removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

I think that we have better options available to us now in an attacking sense than Gerrard and certainly with us trying to break quickly I don't think he'd be up to it as he once was. Defensively I really don't see an option other than him playing the position he has been, certainly with the injuries we've currently got anyway.
Dave makes a good point about the fullbacks pushing on and leaving the space which is hard to cover I do think that whilst he's an unpopular figure on here having Johnson back will help the side

Johnathan Wilson wrote an interesting piece in the Guardian the other day about the growing importance of the counter-counter attack. We often seem to be caught that way - an early ball looking to break being intercepted and the opponents attack from there.Originally posted by rcasemore View PostI think that we have better options available to us now in an attacking sense than Gerrard and certainly with us trying to break quickly I don't think he'd be up to it as he once was. For me Gerrard could help that by working in a late period Bergkamp sort of way. Always giving an option and making it easy/easier for the deeper players to play out. He's not as careful with the ball as Bergkamp but I think he would see the options better than Sterling, etc do at the minute.
You are totally correct that he won't be the Gerrard that he used to be in that position. I'm not sure that is what we need though."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I agree, however I'd play Allen over Gerrard in a CM position and Sterling over Gerrard in a CAM position.
If we got a decent DCM or got Lucas playing well I'd have Gerrard as a rotational player coming into certain games.

Definitely - start some matches and come on for the last 30 minutes as an AM in others.Originally posted by Camble View PostI agree, however I'd play Allen over Gerrard in a CM position and Sterling over Gerrard in a CAM position.

) build up and looking for the space so Gerrard could be more suited to the more advanced role finding those key passes.
