But Shelvey offers far more going forward while neither player are good enough defensively.

I think Henderson is good enough defensively, especially with Lucas next to him, but that's only our opinions so not much to argue there.

Without wanting to get into a discussion over a quality comparison, because it's a no-brainer, but exactly what did Alonso and Mascherano offer us offensively? Alonso always played the pass before the assist, which is exactly what Henderson or Lucas would do.

As a 3 I think they would have a good balance, differing skillsets and would function more than the sum of their parts

At present Henderson and Shelvey is probably our best option in midfield with Gerrard playing just in front for the remaining games this season, we may bring someone in during the summer to play with Lucas but this is a good chance to develop his game in the centre of midfield.

We also need to see how Lucas does on his return, cruciate injuries can sometime leave the player a shadow of what he once was, I am sure he will return to his former levels but there are no assurances he will

I don't think they are comparable personally. I think Lucas showed a lot more than Henderson. It is not agenda driven, I just don't think he is a great prospect. I think he'll be a decent player, but I don't think he'll be a top player.

But he doesn't have enough, at least right now to merit be a first choice player, which at present he is.

Not every player will be, or needs to be a 'top player'. He can become a good player for us and that's more than enough to merit his place at the club.

Well if we want to win the league we are going to need class players in every position (at least our starting 11). Looking at City and United then it is a requirement to be able to compete. That's not to say I think Henderson can't be a top player. I have doubts but its not impossible.
